Re^T Richard Carroll Tells in His
Journal of His Recent Visit
to Lancaster.
yrom The Southern -Tloughman.
Sunday, June 13th, I lectured
tor Rev. W. D. King, of Lancaster,
in the A. M. E Church. A
large crowd of whites and colored
was present. The pastor of
the white Methodist Church, the
Rev. M. M. Brabham, came up

into ioe puipu as soon as x nan
finished my lecture and asked
me to come to his home
Monday morning, saying that he
wanted to talk with me. He said
that there was a work tor me
to do in South Carolina among
both races, especially the colored
race. He suggested that I
purchase a large tent, preach
and lecture, and thus raise all
the money needed for my work
in the State. To start the movement
he gave me his check for
$5, and I promised him that
would do a6 he suggested. I I
was fully impressed that God R

he did to me. lie promised me
that he would pray for me daily. 5
I went from the house of this *
grand old Methodist preacher
with a peculiar feeling, i said J ,
to myself that all the frieuda of 1
the Negroes are not uead.
As I went out from bis house
I recognized Col. Lerov Springs
sitting on his porch in front
of the Methodist preacher's ?
home. He invited me to hia
office. I showed him the check
of Rev. Brabham and told him
of the suggestion, and so impressed
was he ot Kev. Brabham'a
suggestion that he gave me a
check for $100. ?
Then I met Capt. Samuel
White, who gave me $5. Two
farmers who were present in his j
tent gave me $1 each. Then I k
got a message from my old friend, |
F.R.Massey,colored, and he gave N
me $5. On my way home I met ^
Mr. O. B Drakefordat Kershaw.
I told him what thf se gentlemen j ''
had done at Lancaster, and he ]
said, "I have wanted for a long ,
time to give you something, and i
now 1 will give you $5 on the tent. :
The tent-the kind that I wantwill
coet about f580, and 1 will ?
get it The balance of the money
will come. The tent will
be used for the first at Irmo
July 21st, when we will have a ;
farmers' and boeiness men's convention,
which will last for one
week. The tent will also be
used during the fair at Batesburg.
If there are any others who
wish to join me in this great |
\work they can send me trom $1
to $5 and I will publish their
/names. it is mv neart s nesire I
to glority God and do 'he people jfl
good. I am willing to be used I
for the Master. On Sunday I p
urged the people to give the 1
money to Rev. King, for I felt
he needed i\ J was we!l repaid J
for it. Rev. King gave me only ?
#1. I said that God had in store
something tor me. J had k'a '
vision," and it was after I had j ri
made the announcement tliatj
the preahcer got all the money
that Mr. Brabham c-ime to i
rae and made the fore-mentioned
suggestion. May <?od
bless and keep him. His check
for $5 will, in the hands of <Jod,
move mountains, and we expect
to move mountains.
