Some Whitewash Formulas. ?
In response to several inqui
ries, we give herewith two white- B
wash formulas recommended bv I
the Uoi'ed S ates Department of
Agriculture:
For the outside: To half a |
bucketful of unslaked lime add
two handtuls of common salt, ?
and soft soap at the rate of one
pound to fitteen gallons of wash.
Slake slowly, stirring all ot the
time. This quantity makes two
bncketiuls of very adhesive
wash, which is not affected by i
rain.
For the inside: Slake lime
with water and add sutlicieul
skim-milk to bring to the consistency
of cream. To each gal-!

two ouDces of brown sugar dissolved
in water. The germicidal ^
value cf these two recipes may
be increased by adding three- fol
fourths of a pound of chloride ot
lime to every thirty gallons ol
wash.
A good whitewash which will j
not rub off easily is made as
follows:
Slake a half bushel of lime in ?!
boiling water, keeping it just
covered during the process b jdj
Strain and add a peck ot sail
dissolved in warm water. Mixi *
thoroughly, let stand tor several
days, heating it when ready t<>

For outside work a good wash tif
is made by slaking a half bushel Sr
of lime in boiling water and a^
straining. Add to this 2 pounds sa
sulphate of zinc and 1 pound
salt dissolved in water. <
Another wash which 16 said lo L
last almost as well as paint, is rp
this: Slake in boiling water 1-2!
bushel of lime, strain, and add 2 1
pounds sulphate of zinc, 1 pound an
common salt, 1-2 pound whiting. fa.
Mix to proper consistency and f0]
apply hot.
For chicken houses, stables,.
or any place where a disinfectant j
is needed, it is advisable to add 1 ^7
carbolic acid to the w hitewash.!
A very simple solution is made
