* _e WAXHAW COMMENCEMENT, s Supt. Bruce Craven, of the Lancaster Graded Schools, Orator of the Occasion? His Address Highly Prais.A 2 CU ?| The Wftxhaw Enterprise ha9 the following to say of the grad> ed school cloBing exercises last week: u ' The commencement exercises of the Waxhaw* graded school this week were largely attended by the people of the town and community. The people laid $ ' aside their work and business cares and turned out eo masse to fr enjoy the occasion. Beginuing Tuetday evening at 8 o'clock, an interesting program was rendered by pupils of the primary and intermediate departments. The little folks all did well and pleased everybody immensely. Wednesday morning at 10 :30 there was a contest by seven young ladies for a reciter's gold medal. The young ladies all had beautiful recitations and acquitted themselves excellently. Miss Brite Norwood was the success, ful contestant for this medal. In rendering their decisiou the coca mittee made mention of Miss i j Arlie McCain as a close second to Miss Norwood. The annual address was delivered at 11 :30 by Prof. Bruce Craven, superintendent of the Lancaster graded schools, being introduced by Prof. R. N. Nisbet. Prof. Craven's theme was, "The Enemies of the Public - Schools." For more than an boar he held the closest attention of hie large audience. The address wan full of thought and interest from start to finish. Prof. Craven was saying some. thine all the time he was talkie ing. This is not always the ctse with commencement orators. The address was well timed and will accomplish good in the com W / munity. The first thing on the program Wednesday evening at 8 o'clock was the presentation of medals and scholarship. Besides the reciter's medal mentioned above, thejfollowing medals were awarded : scholarship medal, Miss Ruth McCain; for beet deportment among the girls, Mi -s Lola Bnrgess; for best deportmen' among the boyB, Mr. Brown Neill. The scholarship in Converse College, including one ; year's tuition, was won by Mi*s I Zaila McCain. At 8 :30 o'clock ! I another good program of some length was well rendered by pupils of the several departments Thus closed t he first year of I lie v / Waxhaw graded school. That , it has been made a successful year, at least in most respects, goes without the saying. 1'rnf. Teague and his efficient corps of assistants have all done faithful and painst aking work throughout the entire term just closed, and their earnest efforts doubtless meet the approval of at least the great majority of the patrons of the school." Mr. Eugene Elliott, who accompanied Prof. Craven, wachairman ot theVommittee which decided the medal contest, ar.d made the speech of announcement. They report a delight' J ful time in Waxhaw and that the school is a credit to the community and it is an excellen community.
