I1KM*. j TMt FLY AS A 6ERAH CARRIED i Cities and towns throughout! the couhtry are now waging in-1 telligent, systematic warfare | against.the mosquito and the fly, the greatest agencies for disseminating disease germs known t.O T aiiPOfitoi-'a Kaolfli I Muuvnuv^i o ikVUitti 1 authorities will of course join in! the fight against the pests. Some idea o^ the marvelous bacteria carrying capacity of the fly may be gathered from the following, taken fr;om the Charleston News and Courier: ^ 'fhe faew York Evening World 1 says that the Merchants' AssociaV \ tion of that city have organized / against the fly which is known in the books as musca domestica. One of these little beasts, it is said, can lug around with him something like 6,600,000 germs, and without appearing to know that he is loaded. A recent investigation made at the Agricultural Experiment Station at Storrs, Connecticut, showed that one blue liottle fly which was submitted to the acid test was proved to have 90.000 bacteria behind his right ear. The mosquito does not belong, it is explained, to the fly class, that is to say he does not carry around with him quite so many bacteria as the fly, but he is known to be an expert in the way of picking up yellow fever and typhoid fever germs and distributing them where they do the most harm. The Evening World contains this statement of a recent experiment made at Storrs, Connecticut, by Mr. W. M. Esten and Mr. C. J. Mason, who took apart one fly and after searching him through and through found this result: "Acid bacteria, 7(15,000: rapid liquifying bacteria, 280: slow liquifying bacteria, 268,700: bacterium lactis acid: 211,500, and coliaerogenes, 533,800. From only ninety-four swill barrel flies the same pair of. investigators obtained 155,000,000 bacteria; another bunch of swill barrel flies had tucked away in their jeans something like 118.000.000 small germs. Some more or less respectable flies had only 560 germs, but a good, husky fly of a certain order was generally found to carrv more than 6,000.000." A New York alderman says he learned to gamble after being elected to office. Anderson Mail. Moral: Keep out of office. Now that we have waterworks and a street sprinkler, let's go after good pavements. What say you, city fathers, to inaugurating right now a movement for permanent sidewalk improve ment? It is reported that a "settin' " hen in Atlanta hatched out fiftythree bottles of liquor, says the Columbus Enquirer-Sun. Such a l>ooze breeder must be worth a princely fortune in a prohibition State like Georgia. A Chicago woman lias author-. ized her pastor to offer $200 for a / husband who will come up to 7 certain specifications. Some peo-; pie always want too much fori their money; almost any sort of husband would seem cheap at * $200. Augusta Chronicle. And yet there are some husbands who are not worth thirty cents. The Lancaster News gave a resident of that town a long pull t>ecause he caught a big carp. By the way, it was a "red horse" weighing over fifteen pounds that ot?r esteemed fellow townsman, Mr. Brown Ferguson, caught, and not a carp, as we erroneous- ] ly stated. And while confessing, we might as well "own up" to another mistake unwittingly made in the same article both discovered since its publication. That big fish was caught on the * I fork side of the Catawba, arid!b lot 011 Lancaster's. We have a itrong suspicion however, that! it was really a Red Rose red . horse just over on a' visit to its *' White Rose kindred. r The complaint is made that a * tariff on pineapples will affect I the breakfast table. It wouldn't, for example, hurt editors and niggers if pineapples were taxed ' a dollar apiece. 1 A powder has been discovered 1 that will kill a thousand mosqui- 1 toes per ounce, says the Augusta Herald.
