A fish has been caught in waters
of California that has a
beard like a goat. Charleston
Post. Probably a cross between
a Peffer-like Populist and a
mermaid.
If "People" will send us his
name his communication will be
published. It is a well known
^ ' rule of every newspaper office!
not to publish an anonymous ar-:
ticle without knowing the name
of the writer.
I
A rich and prosperous corpora
tion like the Southern Express
Company should repaint and re
?cover its delivery wagon in Lan-;
caster. In its present condition ,
the wagon is somewhat of a re- j
flection on both the company and !
the town.
The Rev. Coke I). Mann, member
of the legislature and a trustee
of Clemson. is the latest contributor
to the discussion in the
daily papers relating to the management
of the college. In an
article in Monday's papers Mr.
Mann undertakes to "back up"
Capt. Minus's charges and suggests
that the thing for President
Mell to do is to resign.
If the resolution adopted by
the board of health, published
elsewhere, shall be carried out,
I^ancaster will be kept clean hereafter,
as it should be. It will be
if noted thai ail npvsnns are re
quired to "clean up premises and
open all ditches thereon." and
that "all premises will be inspected
during the first week of
each month by an officer of the
Health Board," who is to make
a written report of any unsanitary
conditions, etc. We hope
to see the resolution rigidly enforced.
The preservation of the
health of the community demands
it.
Take life like a man. Take it
> as though it was as it is an
earnest, vital, essential affair.
Take it just as though you were
horn to the task of performing a
merry part in it as though the
world had waited your coming.
Take it as though it were a grand
opportunity to achieve, to carry
forward great and good schemes,
to hold and to cheer a suffering,
weary, it may be broken-hearted
brother. Charles H. Spurgeon.
What a smooth, happy world
this would be were we all to follow
that advice! And it is not
unreasonable, nothing impracticable
nor impossible about it.
On the contrary, to "take life
like a man" is the most natural
thing to do. And yet an overwhelming
majority of us fall far
below that standard of human
conduct and endeavor. Why?
Largely l>ecause we are perverse,
selfish, envious creatures, lacking
in true religion and imbued
with the inordinate desire to get
possession of the almighty dollar.
even at the cost of character
and reputation and the sacrifice
of the rights of others, if necessary.
If we but had the high
moral, christian character that
we need and ought to have, the
task of taking life like a man
would indeed be an easy one.
