VOL. 4. NO. 55. SEMI-W] I MICKEY REMINISCENCES. Incidents in the Remarkable Career of late Judge T. J. * Mackey, as Related in Sketch of His Life in Brooks's "Bench and Bar ot South Carolina." m * /? ?? idchiias jenerson Mac&ey, woo was elected judge of the 6th circuit ,on January 27, 1872, was a native of Charleston, where he received his primary education and also the limited college training which he had. lie served in the Mexican war, being a soldier in the Palmetto regiment commanded by Pierce M. Butler, and also in the Seminole war. He entered the confederate f . service as a private, and in 1862 had risen to the position of # captain of engineers in the army ol Gen. Sterling Price. % # * > In January, 187o, he was sent by Gov. Chamberlain to look into conditions in Edgefield. He made a report, in which he Bcored Ithe republican officeholders, da daring them to be both incompetent and depraved. Of the county government he said: "In my deliberate judgment, no such iniquity has been indicted upon any portion of the English speaking [race since the , Saxon wore the iron collar of , *he Norman.*' The judge was fond of telling jokes on Edgefield, Here are some : At the battle of Oherubusco a soldier ot the Palmetto Regiment was seeking the rear in the hottest haste. ''What do you mean bv this?'' asked the officer. "Where are you going?" 'M just can't stand it," said the fugitive. "Well, then,"' asked the ^ officer, "what did you e\er some ne/e lor? "Well, you see,*' explained the soldier, "I live in / Edgefield and I came here for peace. Once, on his to Edgefidd, he said; "I am going to hold court in Edgefiiid, and I ex .jec a sumewiiai excning lerin hh the fall shooting is about to commence." At another time he said : "1 have jus' discovered that a g re at injustice has been done the peopie of JEdgefield. It is charged that they kill negroe* on account of their political opinions. That us altogether a mistake; they do .nt for sport." When Judge Mackey went on the bench he found the civil cab endars crowded, and there hud "been much complaint at the Jaw's delay, lie proceeded at once to help the lawyers to dis' ) pose ot the accumulated busiI ness: and on more than one occasion the bar pa>-jed resolutions V | t of thanks tor his activity. One common practice of his was the holding of night sessions. After * midnight he would say to the sheriff. with a twinkle ot hiseye : ''Mr. Sheriff, announce that the court stands adjourned until 10 o'clock this morning." Once, upon his return from a circuit, he said : have just come from Union, where i held court for 12 days and 10 nights, u Anlw f Aiir /?! ? a * -II ^,1 I" UM UU4J IUVI4 *!
