THE PRESS AND THE WAR AG AINST
CONSUMPTION.
A just tribute to the power ant
influence of the press is paid b;
the Natioual Association for th<
Study and Prevention ot' Tuber
culosis, when it says that th<
newspapers, of all the ageucie<
at work, is giving the greates
aid in the war being wager
against consumption, which dreac
disease numbers its victims by
the hundreds of thousands in the
United States annually; and ii
will never be wiped out, says tht
Association, until the widespread
ignorance concerning it is overcome,
hence the inauguration ol
rhe present campaign of educa.
tion. Some idea of the magnitude
of the work being done by
rhe newspapers in this country
in disseminating literature in re
lation to the study and prevention
of consumption may be gathered
from the fact that the aggregate
space devoted thereto averiiges
over 25,000 column inches a
week, or, ?? the Association expresses
it, nearly one-half mile
of publicity a week. The .Association
has been compiling some
statistics on the subject, of which
it says:
The investigation which the
National Association conducted
included all of the daily and
weekly newspapers throughout
the United States as well as some
of the larger journals and magazines.
In the two weeks which
were taken as a standard, it was
found that 51,557 column inches
of space was devoted to the sub
ject of tuberculosis. If all ol
tine iu it 11?r were gamereti rogether
at one time, it would make
a newspaper the ordinary size of
3t>9 puges printed solid, without
any advertisements. all on th?
subject of tuberculosis. II it
were arranged in one u>ug chain,
it would make a single column of
matter four-fifths of a mile long
and two and one quarter inches
wide.
Continuing the Association
says :
Within a year's time thiiiisauds
ot tons of leaflets, aggregating
over one hundred million p ages,
are distributed by the various organizations
engaged in the warfare
against tuberculosis. Hut
more than all of these individual
agencies, the National Asso.-i.ttion
believes that the press i- 'tie
greatest means of educating the
masses concerning this disease.
It the present rate of interest on
rhf part of the newspaper world
continues, it is estimated that
within a lew years every man.
woman and child in the I'ni-ed
Siates will have learned the sim
.- la doctrir.es of tuberculosis.
