Fanned by a siifr wind, a tire which originated in a barn al Jennings avenue and Petei Smith street, in the southern portion ot this city this afternoon ^ oyer an area of teu blocks in length and seven in width, destroyed property roughly estimated in value to be in excess of $5,000,000, and caused the death of six persona The tire, which broke out in a fashionable residence district, was beyond all control within l? minutes after it started, and wae not checked until dynamite was resortnd tn fnnr Iiamm 1 - ? ) V-* 4*V VA A O 1UIVI . The Texas & Pacific roundhouse and twenty engines, the repair shops, four churches, twc public school buildings and Walker's Sanitarium were the public buildinge destroyed. The others were residences, most ot them new and pretentious, in the most exclusive residence section oi the city. So rapidly did flames spread that people ? viuk within a radios ol three blocks of the place of origin had no time to save anything except the clothing they wore. A patient whose identity has not been learned, perished in Walker's Sanitarium and three men were electrocuted and their bodies burned to cinders in the Sawyer electric plant. Herbert Stacy was fatally burned in an endeavor to save his dwelling, and a fireman fell from a house top and was killed. The Rev. H. O. Cowan, assis tant pastor of the Broadway Presbyterian church, is missing. The burned district tonight is being patrolled by troops to prevent looting and it is estimated that 500 familiee are homeless. Many of these have gone to Dallas, where shelter has been of' tered. Large Residence at Fort Mill Destroyed by Rire. Fort Mill special in Monday's Charlotte Observer: A large dwelling house near die depot, owned by Capt. J. W. Ardrey, was destroyed by fire yesterday afternoon. The house was occupied by .J. W. McCain. A strong wind was blowing and the building nas consumed so quickly that little of the household goods were saved, notwithstandig the fact that a large crowd gathered quickly after the alarm was given. The fiio is supposed to have originated from a detective stove flue in the kitchen and was well under way when it was discovered. The building was insured for $1,000. and was worth perhaps $1,500. Killed in Duel With Officers. Fitzgerald, Oa., April 4.? Robert Gresham was killed early this morning in a pistol duel with Chiel of Police Brub.iker and Patrolman Johnson. The man was being hnnted by the . officers and fired upon them from a hiding place in a dark alley. The officers jointly opened tire and Gresham fell with fajur bullet wonnds.
