Committee which in directing
the program of exercises to be
held here on the twentieth of
May in celebration of the 134th
anniversary of the signing of the
Mecklenbnrg Declaration of Independence,
has invited the Governors
of the Thirteen Original
States to come to Charlotte for
the three days' festivities. Governor
Eben S. Draper has accepted.
The people of Charlotte are
preparing to give Mr. Taft the
greatest reception ever accorded
a President, of the Uuited States
in a southern city. Local officials
of both the Southern and Seaboard
railroads have given the
assurance that ample train accommodations
will be provided
and that reduced rate? will be
offered. Special train? will be
operated into the city on the

Earthquakes in Virginia and
West Virginia.
Winchester, Va , April 3.? j
Two separate and distinct shock?
of earthquake were felt here
early this morning. While no
reports of damage have been received
here, many residents j
were awakened and considerable
alarm was felt about the disturbance.
Reports Irom Oh ?rlestown
and Harpers Ferry, W. Va,
show that the earthquake was
felt there also. Vibrations lasted
about one-half minute in
each shock and were from the
west to east.

Mr. Webb White, who has
been located at Spencer, N. C.,
and hun been in the employ of

spent Wednesday in Rock Hill,
his old home. He left on irain

, Augusta, where he has accepted
he position of general foreman
of the Southern Railway shops
there. Mr. White has resided
