Making a Beautiful Yard.
The Progressive Farmer.
Before making out an order
lor trees or shrubs, or flowers,
you should determine where I hey
are to be planted?what purpose
the> are to accomplish in the
beautilying of your home grounds.
Don't t:et into the common error
ot ordering something because
the description pleases you, or
because some one h::s told you it
is a good thing to h&vo. It will
not iipiU'o fo ho n trnnii t.liini' iin
Ies9 you have the proper setting
for it.
Those who are beginning at
the beginning, who have merely
a bare piece of ground with a
house on it to start with, should
make a definite plan and draw
it on paper, indicating the leading
features thereon. Avoid as
you would the plague the too
common practice of scattering
trees and shrubs promiscuously i
about the place. That may be a
good way to plant a nursery,
hut it is not a good way to adorn i
a home.
The working out ot your plan
should result in a picture, in

panse of greensward for a foreground.
anda frame of trees,shrubs
and flowers at the sides. The
observer of such a planting, or
landscape, would exclaim: " >? hat
a beautiful home!" But on the
nursery style, his only comment
would probably be ''What a tine
lilac bush !" if there happened
to be a fire lilac bush near lrm
HOW TO CIIOOSK YOUR TRKKS ANT)
PLANTS.
You ask what, kinds of trees
and fruits and dowers you should
plant in order to make your
home picture? That is a second
ary matter, to be decided bv
your personal preference. The
arrangement ot wliHt you plaut
is far more important than the
kind. So, in making your selections,
remember these fundamental
principles : Keep the center
of your place open; set your shade
trees at the corners and at 9Uitaable
intervals along the sides; in
selecting trees choosekinds whose
size and habit of growth are
most suitable tor your premises,
remembering that those of rela
tively low growth are better
adapted for small places, and
that trees that will do well toi

Farm Demonstration "Work
in Chester?Results Obtained.
Chester special in the News
and Courier: Col. T. J. Cunningham,
v.ho ha^ charge of the
farm demonstration work in
Chester County that is being
carried on under the general hu
pervision of Dr. S. A. Knapp, it.
busy collecting the re-ults from
lands that were planted and cultivated
according to the recommendations
and directions sent
out. This work involves considerable
detail and will not be (
completed for s< me time yet, but
enough data have been col'ected
to -how that the results are highly
gratifying. It. in likely Miat
farmers who have cultivated land
this year, according to this sys
tern will do i-o again next year,
enlarging their acreage considerably,
while others who have not
tried the tystem this year can not
fail to be attracted by the liue
results.
Mr. II L. Haves, who cultivated
one acre in cotton under the
directions of Dr. Knapp and his
a-sbtants, reports that ho has
gathered 1,300 pounds of seed
cotton from this acre, wliile similar
land lying adjacent, which
was cultivated according to the
regular methods in vogue hereabouts,
has yielded only 800
pound.
Mr. J. G. Lee, of Lowryville,
planted and cultivated one acre
of corn under Dr. Knapp's directions.
He reports a yield of 27
bushels and 3 pounds, while
similar land cultivated in the
regular wav yields only 8 or 10
bushels to the acre
Mr. Walter Simpron reports
40 bushels of corn from one acre,
while land identically like this
-elected acre vields onh' 0 or
10 bushels when cultivated according
to I he old method.
These instances might he multiplied,
for in every case it is believed
that handsome results will
be secured. Suffice it to say,
however, that the ratio of increase
in every case so far report
ed is about as given in the ex
ample* furnished as above The
general est of preparation is not
increased, while the yield is

You need a sufficient amount of
good wholesome food and more than
this you need to fully digest it.
Else you can't gain strength, nor
can you strengthen your stomach if
it is weak.
You must cat in order to live and
maintain strength.
You must not diet, because the
body requires that you eat a sufficient
amount of food regularly.
But this food must be digested,
and it must be digested thoroughly.

you must take something that will
help the stomach.
The proper way to do is to eat
what you want, and let Kodol digest
the food.
Nothing else can do this. When
the stomach is weak it needs help;
you must help it by giving it rest,
and Kodol will do that.
