J. Bryan to-day gave ou'
the following statement:
The election has gone agaimt
us by a decisive majority. The

to analyse them or to say what

Republican victory.

platform which embodied what
we believed to be good lor the
American people but it is for
the people themselves to decide
what laws they desire and wha'
methods of Government they
prefer. I have taith that the
publici'y which we asked for
will yet commend itself to the'
American people, that the election
of Senators by the people
will he secured, that the iniqui
ties ol the trusts will arouse an
opposition that will result in
the elimination of the principl *
of private monopoly. I am
confident that the people wilt
see the neces-dtyWcr the labor legislation,
and the tariff reduction
which our platform demanded
1 am confident, too, that thecdu
ca'innal work done in this campaign
will result, in securing
greater protection to bank depositors.
"The above are the most prominent
retorms for whichjwe labored,
.and 1 believe that these
reforms will yet. coma together
with more effective regulation
of railroads, and indpendence
for the Filipinos.
"1 desire to commend the work
of our national committee. I
am entirely satisfied with Mr.
Mack, as the chairman, and with
the members oi the committee.
1 do not see how they did and
as for myself, I put forth every '
effort in mv nowsr to bpwir?

for our cause. The nomination
came from the hands of
the voters. I have obeyed their
command, and have led as best I
could. Words will not express
my gratitude for the willingness
of^thejDemocrats during the past
twelve years. Neither am I able to
adequately express my appreciation
for the kind words which
have been spoken since the
election. If I could regard the
defeat as purely a personal one
1 would consider it a blessing
rather than a misfortune, for 1
am relieved of the burdens and
responsibilities of an office that
i9 attractive only in proportion
as is given an opportunity to
render a larger public servio.
Hut I shall serve as willingly in
a private capacity as in a pub'.ic
one. God does not require great
things ot us. He only require^
that we improve the opportu
nities that are presented; and 1
shall be glad to improve the opportunities
lor service presented

"In this hour of national defeat
I find some consolation in
the cordial support given by ray
neighbors, by the citizens ol Lincoln,
and by the people ol the
State of Nebraska. With a Dam
ocratic Governor, and a Democratic
Legislature, we shall be
able lo put into practice so much
of the Denver platform as relates
to Stale legislation, and I
trust that our Slate 'will set an
example that will be an influence
for good in the nation."
