The Game Laws Now in Force Interesting Summary Prepared by.Secretary J as. H. Rice, Jr. The Audubon society is in receipt of requests daily !or copies of the game laws. These can not be supplied since the issue has been exhausted, giving conclusive evidence of interest felt in kite subject all over South Carolina. Tne society has requested ' hat extra copies he re turned Kequests have come also from other S'atos. To ina'<e the pricipal points clear the following is a nummary of the more important laws as prepared by Secretary Jas. Ilenry Re, Jr.: GAME 1MKPS. The statue of 1905, passed two years before the Audubon society was chartered, defines what are Kame b'rds and what are not. The game birlsare: Swan-*, wild geese, brant, wild ducks, i rails (marsh hens), coots, gallinulee, surf birds, snipe, woolcock, quail (partridge), rice birds, black bird, dove, sandpipers, upland plover, curlew, wild turkey andjprairie chicken. It is not known to the society why prairie (pinnated grouse) hens were put on this list, nor why Mongolian, or ring-necked, pheasants and ruffed grouse were left off There are no prairie chickens in Sou'h Carolina; whereas there are both Mon guiittn pneasams and rutted grouse, but such is tho law. The above birds may be shot in tho season permitted by law, or taken in those seasons bv any method which the law allows. NONOAMK BIRDS. All birds not on this list are non-game birds within the meaning of the law and may not be killed at any time; nor mav their nests or eggs be destroyed It is a misdemeanor to have in possession any part of a non-game bird, such as feathers, body or skin; and it is equally against the law whether sucti bird was killed within or without the State. THK STATK OWNS THE BIRDS. In the preamble to this act it is stated: "That all wild birds, whether resident or migratory, ;_ 1.1.: _ i3. . - a ?? m una oiaie, snan oe, anil are hereby, declared to be the properly of the Stale." That is the law of South Carolina. BIRDS THAT ARK KXCEI'TBD. That act further recites that the English sparrow, cooper's hawk (the chicken or hen hawk), the sharp-shinned hawk (known locally as the "Blue Darter''), the great horned owl and all other birds which are by nature destructive ofjother birds, are|not included among the birds protected by this act, nor are the nests or eggs of these birds protected. A person is allowed to kill crows on his premises if thev are destroying crops, but. he is not allowed to sell them or their feathers. No non-game bird mav be shipped out of the State nor in iy the eggs or feathers of such biid be shipped. D FOR SCIENTIFIC PUBI'OSBS. Certificates may be granted by the secretary of state to any person of the age of 15 or up ward, who is properly accredited, permitting the holder to col lect birds and their eggs for strictly scientific purposes The applicant must be endorsed by two well known ornithologists, and if it is proved that the holder has taken birds for other than scientific purposes his certificate will be at once canceled and not renewed. Besides he will be liable to a fine of $100 or 30 days imprisonment. Mongolian or other pheasant is I made from November 15 to I March 1, wilh the exception of I the following counties: Beaufort, Hamptou, Dorchester, Oolletou, Charles'on. Barn- . wpil, Berkeley, Aiken, Oconee. Fairfield, Saluda, Georgetown and Clarendon. Tlie e counties have from November 1 to April 1. The rest are from August 1 to February 1. GAME BIRDS NOT TO BE SOLD. The act. ot 190G makes it a misdemeanor to sell, offer or ex pose for sale, to pothunt, net or trap, or by firelight to pursue witu intent to c*tch, kill or injure aiiv of the game birds named in that section. The hand ling, possession or ownership of the->e birds is prima taeie evidence that, they are being offered for sale. THE LAW OF THE LANI). These are the laws of the State ol South Carolina, made by the lawful representatives ot the people aud are binding on every citizen whether he thinks they are wise or unwise. The first consideration is that they are the law6 of the land.
