county's loading citizens, died

Maj. J. N. Vandivor, a prominent
citizen of Anderson, died Tuesday. He
was nominated for the legislature in the
last primary.

Fire broke out in the Carolina hotel
in Hock Hill Wednesday night and considerable
damage was done before the

Mrs. P. A. Parker of Wingate underwent
an operation for cancer at St.
Peter's Hospital in Charlotte yesterday.

A negro named Buck Davis, from
Greenville, was accidentally killed at
Great Falls Wednesday. He was swinging
out of a moving "dinkey" engine,
when he was struck by a projecting
rock in a cut and killed.
Mr. 11. .S. Heymati has sold an interest
in bis si/.ing business to Mr. (J. B.
Skipper, superintendent of tho Lancaster
Cotton Mills, and the concern will
be known in the future as the Skipper

Mr. George Bowers, one of Lancaster
county's successful farmers, caine near
losing his gin house by fire a few days
ago. Fortunately the llamcs were discovered
beloro much damage was done.
The fire was due to an accident.
Lum Taylor, arrested by Policeman
J. Mike Sowell, was tried and convicted
before. Magistrate H. F. Phillips, of the
cotton mills, one day this week, of the
charge of profanity in church. The
sentence was .'$0 days or $'20. The fine
was paid.
Wade Sinclair, the little son of Mr
Thomas Sinclair, of the Creek neighborhood,
died Tuesday night of a paralytic
stroke received last Saturday. The
child was not quite three years old. The
burial was at Vppcr CampCreekchurch
Wednesday.
Miss l.eola Horn, daughter of Mr.
George Horn of Cnioiivillo* is in St.
Peter's Hospital, Charlotte, where she
has been operated on for cancer of tho

be glad to know that she is now getting

A South Carolina llag was placed on
the graded school building yesterday,
below the national flag. Kxcrcises appropriate
to tho occasion were held,
addresses being made by Supt. Craven
and the Itev. W. A. Fairy and patriotic
songs rendered by the school. Mr. John
T. Green, of the hoard of trustees, presided.
Miss Jessie May, daughter of Mr. aid
Mrs. John t'ole, of lloyston, Ga., and
granddaughter of the late W. A. Milliard
of this county, died a few days
ago, at tho home of her parents, aged 15
years, she was a pretty and lovable
girl and iter untimely doatb is a severe
blow to her fond parents.
Miss M. Klizaheth Clark, of UoHh
.Springs, who. as recently noted to the
Kra, went to Crocketville to take a position
as teacher, has been appointed by
Governor Ansel to a scholarship from
tho Fifth Congressional District in the
Confederate Memo College in Charleston,
which scholarshrps are awarded

The negro captured in Flat Creek and
lodged in jail last Saturday by sheriff
Hunter is named Daniel lluchanan, and
not Dan McKenna, as stated in Wednesday's
News. 1'he name of the negro
he shot is Henry Clark, the bullet striking
him in the leg. lluchanan claims
that he shot Clark because the latter
was attacking his lluehanan's) mother
with an axe.
During the past ti n days there lias
been unite an exodus of mill people
from Fort Mill to the other towns in
this section. Tho two mills here have
been closed for the past six weeks, and
lius period t>r idleness has forced the
people to seek employment at other
mills. No information is obtainable as
to when the mills in fhi- plate will resume

Mr. Walter I'. Crenshaw, son of .Mrs.
C. C. Crenshaw, eelehrated his Hist
birthday last Monday night, <>ct. 12th,
at his home at the mill village. He
had a nice supper at 7 o'eloek which
was enjoyed by a numberol" his friends.
After supper the ladies sang some beautiful
hymns until the string band arrived.
which made some fine music,
which was enjoyed by all present.
Mr. tleo. W. Jones, who has taken
one of the county's road contracts, began
work this week on the kCaindon
road, and is now working between
Lancaster and Klgin, having already
completed about three miles, lie has
invested in a modern road machine,
which is doing tine work. The machine
roeontly purchased by the county is being
usod on the New Cut road.

visit Columbia during the Fair, who
will advise the manager of the Bureau

visit the city, giving the number of
persons in the party and tho number of

Work was begun Wednesday on the
now bridge over C'.ine creek west of
town. The old bridge, it will be recalled,
was among the many in tho
county washed away by tho Hood some
weeks ago. The new structure will bo
entirely of reinforced concrete, and will
be so constructed as to withstand any
kind of freshet. The work is being done
under the supervision of tho county
engineer, Mr. Itoiuarlh. who drew
the plans and specifications.
Lancaster is to be congratulated on
the start thus made to construct permanent
bridges across her streams, lor
one of the county's heaviest expenses is
the building and rebuilding of numerous
wooden bridges every year.
Snake in Cotton.
There were lively times at Mr. K. J.
Flynn's gin, in the New Cut section,
for a few minutes one day this week.
As a basket of cotton was thrown up
on the gin breast a large snake, said to
have been a rattler, leisurely crawled
out of the cotton, sat up and took notice

The court of <ieneral Sessions, which
convened here Monday morning, adjourned
Tuesday night. When Tho j
News went to press Tuesday afternoon 1
the court was engaged in the trial of '
Harvey Masscy for killing Hart Fraser, ^
both colored, which resulted in a ver- )
diet of not guilty. According to tho I
evidence Fraser attacked Masscy with
a "grab plow," whereupon tho defendant
shot him. t'ol. \V. <Hough represented
the defense. The other homicide
ease, that of Mamie Ingram, charged
with the murder of her own infant,
likewise resulted in an aeoiiittal '
State failed to prove tlint the child was
ever alive and a verdict of not guilty <
was accordingly ordered. The woman 1
was defended by Judge Krnest Moore. '
The sentence of Lewis 1'otls, convicted
of violating the dispensary law. as pre- .
\ iously published, was 3 months and a
tine of ^100. The sentence of Lewis
l>orrah. convicted on a similar charge,
was 3 months or 9100.
