, A Excitement in Spartanburg t J ail Stormed by Infuriated i Citizens Who Wanted to Wreak Summary Vengeance on Black Brute Who Assaulted Young L.ady- -Troops Called Ou t to Guard Jail Spartanburg special In tho Charleston Sunday Nows: Thirsting for tiro life of John Irby, a | negro charged with attempting to criminally assault Miss I.illio Deinpsoy, h liighly respected young whito woman, an angry mob numbering over a thousand men yesterday afternoon surrounded and made several unsuccessful efforts to storm the county jail, where ho was taken upon being arrested soon after he attacked the young woman. At 1 o'clock tliis morning three companies of the National < Juard of South | Carolina, under the command of Assistant Adjutant and Inspector Ceneral Ilrock, which had been called out to insure protection for the negro, aro guarding the jail, while the mob, increased by threo bund rod armed men from tlreenville, has drifted to the Southern , Railway station to await the arrival at 2.40 o'clock of Train No 85, which is reported to lie bringing a brother of; Miss Dempsey to tlio scene of action. Tho streets aro now well-nigh deserted, except for the pickets that have beon posted along the streets leading to (lie jail, and all is quiet. Should Miss Dempsoy's brother arrive at 2.40 it is rumored that another attack may ba made on tho jail, but this is extremely doubtful. Strong appeals liavo been made to the mob to let tho law take its course, and Governor Ansel, who is in Greenville, has promised a special term of Court to try tho negro. Sheriff Nicholls has sworn in a scoro or more of special deputies and all are heavily armed, and if any further attempt is made to storm tho jail it is certain to bo , repulsed. The assault upon Miss Dempsey was committed this morning about 11 o'clock and was one of the most brutal ever mown in the history of this section. A tierce struggle took place. The negro with the ofllcer holding on to him were dragged fitly feet. Within ten minutes after Irby had been landed in jail Sheriff Nieholls received word that a mob was forming at Saxon and expected to march to the city and storm the jail. In order to he on the safe side Sheriff Nieholls swore in deputies, and arming them with repeating rilles. stationed thorn inside the jail. ('apt. The angry citizens of Saxon began to gather in the Court House yard at about 1 o'clock and at '2 o'clock there were several hundred people assembled. !
