Since our lust letter the second |
primary is over and now people
are waiting for the general election
when the big guns will be
shot off Then it will be "Bill" (
Bryan or "Bill" Taft. Which? |
Why, Bryan, of course, if Taft is
beaten. Then here's hoping (
that the Nebraskan will be "it "
The schools and colleges in
Columbia have opened. The
college boys and girls are Evening
up things iu the old capital.
Yes we wish that some of Lan
caster's merry bachelors were
here to see the pretty college
girls, and then the other sets
could be dee-lighted too if they
were nere. rney would make
Bill Jones, Eugene Elliott and
everyQ set ot young bachelors
anil widowers "sit up nud take
notice". Come to the State fair
and see.
Prof. S. M. Busby's sciieol
opened at Shandon on the 21st.
Prof. Busby has a fine school
and b>?th teachers and pupils are
doing a good work. A new
building will be erected lor this
school, which is much needed because
oi the c.owded space and
large enrollment.
The Hyatt Park High School
opened on the 14th, a week ear
lier than the other scnools Profs.
Banks and Cook are ranch pleased
with the outlook. This school
too is overcrowded and new desks
had to be ordered. A high
school department will be added
soon, as it was voted on thiu
week.
The city schools can hardly
accommodate all of the children
who applied and "more room"
is asked for.
The colleges opened under
bright, prospects. About 1000
students, over 300 in each ot the
tluoe colleges. The scribe has
not seen all of the Lancaster delegation
yet, but they are here.
The "Capital city" has been
quite lively this week. Last Monday
Gentry Brothers' Dog and
Pony Show was here. They
gave fine exhibitions, it is said,
as they always do. Those who
attended were taught several
lessons by the clever "stunts"
of the dumb beasts. Then the
bill at the Columbia Theatre
was exceptionally good. Among
the attractions were A1 G. Field's
Minstrels, "The Lion and the
Mouse", a s'rong play, a negro
show lor negroes only (except
the ushers and those connected
with the Theatre), Bert Hudsou
and ''Chicago" Sandow in a
wrestling mutch, and the week
closed with a great hit, Norman
Hackett in "Classma'es."
Then the three moving picture
and vaudeville theatres had
excellent bills Those are "The
Little Grand", "The Lvric'"and
"Fairyland". At the "Little
Grand" was a man called the
"Human Fish" whofwas said*to
- ? ~ ~
eat, drink ..:id smoke under water.
As an advertisement for him
self he did the "high dive slunt"
three times during the week.
He dived off the Stile newspaper
building, three stories high,
into f^jr feet of water. Gre.it
crow* thronged there each time
to see him and on Saturday it
looked like fair week around 'lie
piace where he gave this exhibition.
The wrestling match was said
