Foster has received a letter from
Miss Poppenheim informing her
of the decision in her favor in
regard to the U. D. C. scholarship
at Teachers' college of Columbia
university, NewYork. The scholarship
is tuition and $350. Miss
Fopter is to be congratulated upon
the handsome compliment paid
her, and Lancaster is, of course,
proud of this rare distinction failing
upon one of htr gifted young
daughters. Miss Foster has just
returned from the summer school
of the University of Virginia,
where she took a course in physics
and Latin.

Death of Child at Van IVyck.
Little Sarah Bates, daughter of
Mr. and Mrs. .1. W. Bales, ot!
j Van VVyck, died Saturday night,
of dysentery, aged about two
years. The remains were buried
at Van Wyck Sunday afternoon
at 3.30 o'clock, the Rev. C. R.
Carter conducting the funeral
services.

She was a bright, precocious
child for her tender aije, being
not quite two years old. She
was a child worshiped by her
parents and sisters and brother
and tenderly loved and admired
by all who knew her.
The funeral and interment
were conducted by the Rev C.
I'. Carter, pastor of her devoted
parents, the funoral being conducted
at the homo of the parents.

The white graded schools had
an auspicious opening Monday
morning At the Central
school, the enrollment was probably
the largest within its history.
Quite a number of the patron
witnessed the opening exercises.
Dr. J. II. Boldridge led
in prayer and addiesses appropriate
to the occasion were made
by Superintendent, Craven and
Trustees Gregory and Green.
