about a Charming Young
Lady of Lancaster.
The Baltimore America" of
last Thursday had the following
to say about Miss Florence Robinson,
the deservedly popular and
highly attractive young lady of
the Heath-Jones company, who
has been in Baltimore lor some
days, buying the company's fall
stock of goods:
The millinery houses are being
especially rushed now, as
many Southern milliners come
up at this time of the year, and
the houses look more as though
a social function of some sort
were going on than the serious
proportion of selling goods |

S. C , and is enthusiastic
over the prospects for business
this fall.

Lancaster, we have very large
crops of that staple. 'The larmers
are a little spoiled on the
question of price. They got such
big prices last year that they
think they ought to get 15 cents
every year. 1 am afraid that they
will not get anything like that
much, however, though we do
hope they will get 10 cents. I
have been buying for HeathJones
Co., for several years and
although 1 am not buying quite
as much this year as 1 did last,
the orders are large and will surpass
any placed before last year.

We had an object lesson at the
reunion at Greenville last week
in favor of prohibition in South
Carolina. All who have attend
ed these reunions for yeara past
know that many of the old vetern.n?

( f strong drink where it was easily
procured, which caused the citizens
of Columbia, and other cities
where these meetings were held
to close their doors against us,

for the reason that they did not
want drinking people in theii
homes. Nearly all the people oi
these cities would at any time
lurnish food and shelter for these
battle-scarred veterans, provided
they had left off the excessive
use of whiskey. But on account
ot this bad habit with them the>
have for some yearn been lodged
in tents and provided with straw
for bedding.
Shall we blame the committee*
oi management and charge want
of respect for the boys of the
Confederacy? No. not that; bui
the State and county put the
whiskey in easy reach, and somt
failed to resist the temptation ;
and we all know the result.
But about meeting in Greenville
where there is no liquoi
sold. Not a veteran was undei
the influence of strong drink
and ihey were practically tin
same men who attend the re
unions each year.
The difference in the behavioi
of these old men where whiskey
is pold and where it is not shoulc
cause the voters in South Caro
una to consider tlie harm the)
are doing their iellowmen ir
voting for the sale of whiskey.
And again, the men who pat
ronize these dispensaries as ?
rule are those who have but little
money, and that is needed at
their homes to buy clothing and
food for the women and children,
