Hot, Arson and Lynching at
Capital of Illinois?Assault
on White Woman the
Cause.
Springfield, 111., Aug. 15.?
Two white men were killed, au
nnknowu negro was lynched,
more than a half-hundred per
bous were injured and two score
ot houses, mostly occupied by
negroes, were burned last night,
as the result ot an attempt by a
mob to lynch a uegro who had
assaulted a white woman. After
a night of riot, arson and slaughter,
the troops called out by the
Governor, succeeded early today
in restoring a semblance of
order and stopped the fire. One
thousand militiamen are patrolling
the streets and it is believed
that further disorder will be
prevented.
The rioting were precipitated
by the assault committed yesterday
by a negro upon Mrs. Mabel
T-r
nanman, wile of a street railway
conductor. While the woman
slept alone in her home on
a populous residence street,
awaiting the return of her husband,
a man brot e into the hou?e,
dragged her into the rear yard
f''and assaulted her. Before noon,
George Richardson, a young ne
gro, was arrested by the sheriff's
force, charred with the crime.
Richardson who rvlonofl

a train and rushed to Peoria.
Along with him was taken, Joe
Jimes, another negro, accused of
killing a State mine operator,
after attempting an assault
upon the inspector's daughter.
The mob gathered at the jail
after darkness to find the negroes
gone. Loper's restaurant \va9
demolished, some one having
mentioned that Loper furnished
an automobile in which the negroes
were taken away. They
burned his automobile in the
street.
Tro< ps are being rushed here
trom all parts of the State. Negroes
are leaving b'.r trains, trol
ley ears and many by foul. The I
mob spirit seems still to bo rampant,
although the Governor and
military authorities claim they
have the situation well in hand.
