TRADE AND THE PUBLIC ROADS.
We chanced a few days ago to
fall into a group ot men who
j:
were tupcuaoiujc, u ?
way some of the tilings that have
hindered the progress of Winus
boro in the past. There were
suggestions many, but one specially
that is worthy of consideration.
it was said that there is
not an instance in which the
people living in Winnsboro have
contributed to the improving of
a single road leading into town.
The foregoing is the inlroduc
fcory paragraph of a leading editorial
in this week's Winnsboro
News and Herald on the road
question as it relates to the trade
of that town. Further on in the
article our esteemed contemporary
shows conclusively why it
is to the interest o! the busiuess
men ot Winnsooro 10 raise oy
subscription or otherwise a sum
ot money, as large as possible, to
be expended in improving the
roads leading into the town. In
its conclusion the News and
llerald says:
Fairfield county is rich in resourcch.
Winnsboro is the natural
market tor the most ot the
produce that is raised in this
county. The one thing that
more than any tiling else prevents
the town trom getting the trade
that naturally belongs to it is the
roads that lead into town. There
is nothing else that would so
stimulate trade in this section as
the improving ot the public
highways. A start must be made.

boro is equally true as to mmy
other towns in the Slate, Lancaster
among I lie number. It
would be interesting to know,
even approximately, what this
community loses annually in
trade on account oi the condition
of the roads. It certainly
amounts to a good many thousands
of dollars. Monroe, Wax
haw, Kershaw and other points,
each get a large trade that would
naturally come to Lancaster were
the roads leading to this town in
good condition, particularly during
the cotton marketing and
fertilizer hauling seasons.
It was only the o'her day that
Mr. William Hayes, one of the
best farmers of the e< unty. loul
ed his wagons with corn, carried
the grain to Monroe and sold it
for a $ 1 a bushel, when he knew
before he lett home ihat he coukl,

for $1.05. Why did he take lus

CALL FOR CAMPAIGN FUNDS. j
Bryan's first appeal for campaign
contributions, which was
published in full in the last issue
of The News, was made to the
farmers?the backbone of the
country. This appeal has been
followed by a call issued by the
Democratic candidate for presi
dent to (he Democratic newspapers
of the United States to
begin the collection of campaign

"I wish every Democratic
newspaper would begin the collection
of a fund from its subscribers.
There are very lew
Democrats who could not afford
to make a small contribution,
and the people will never be able
to control the Government until
they take on themselves the
burden of supplying campaign
funds. As long as a few men
furnish the money to finance a
campaign these men will exert
an undue influence on the Government."
The News will take pleasure
in receiviug and forwarding contributions
from its siih-rrihMra nr
others who may desire to help
the cause of democracy in a sub
stsntial way. It takes a lot of
money to run a national cam*

gladly and cheeriully "come
across" vsi?h our share of the expenses.
