A. Correspondent Who
Thinks That He Has
^ Four.d Sundry "Holes" in
a Recent Editorial Article
in This Paper.
Mr. Editor: Kindly allow me
space in your paper to reply to
an editorial in issue dated June
24th, under caption, "Criticising
Yerd ict."
Of course the verdict referred
to was that iu the case against
Grover Welsh for killing Berry
Mobley.
I am free to admit, in the outset,
Mr. Editor, that I um not
able to cope with you in newspaper
articles or controversies,
neither am I seeking a controversy,
realizing as I do that you
possess rare talent and ability
along that line. But with faith,
however, in the adage, that:
"He that i9 in the right is doubly
armed," I teel emboldened to
undertake to point out, what appears
to me to be faulty argument
in said editorial.
It occurs to me, that you were
endeavoring to cover, as with a
blanket, the verdict in this case.
I shall endeavor, Mr. Editor, to
^jpoint out and have something to
say about four very prominent
and peculiar holes in this blanket.
I shall take up the hole9 and
number them in the order of
their discovery :
Hole No. 1. Around the edges
/ of this hole you argue the in
justice of giving too much credence
to newspaper reports; but
upon looking through this hole
the fact reveals itself that some
newspapers may be either subsidised,
or biased for policy's
sake, to comment or refuse to
comment, as the case may be,
without any regard whatever
for the dictates of right and justice.
Nevertheless, I have some
consolation in the faith that this
is not the case with all newspapers.
Hole No. 2. Around the edges
of this hole, you emphasize the
Denent or an "lnterchauge ot
views and mutual consultation
enjoyed by a dozen men in a
jury room." As we peer through
this hole we behold the sad and
i ' melancholy panorama of the interior
of a court house, or socalled
''Tem;>le of Justice."
Here we behold all the necessary
officers of the court at their
proper stations, and case utter!
case being deposed of. Finally !
a ^ise is taKen hp against a man j
tor murder. Twelve men are
chosen to weigh the evidence,!
pro and con. on the scales of
justice, and report their findings. |
The State produces evidence.'

ic, both in volume and specific
gravity, as the rock of Gibraltar;
the defense produces
"trumped up" evidence as llimsy
as a spider's web and light as
chatT; the dozen men, however,
in whose hands the scales ol!
justice are plsced. and who are
sworn to render a verdict in accordance
with the law and the
evidence, after enjoying the allimportant
benefit of an "interchange
of views and mutual con ;
euUation," render a verdict that

of chaff outweigh the rock of J

nevertheless not to question the
accuracy of such scales or the
manuer 111 which they were ma<
nipulat-ed. lest we ''fend to destroy
the respect and the confidence
of the people in the
courts of th<* land."
Hole No 3. Around the ragged
edges or this hole we read that
it is "presumption on the part
of a newspaper man or other in
mviviuai vu set up uis judgment
against (hat of twelve men especially
charged with the de.
termination of the guilt or innocence
of a prisouer at the bar of
justice." But taking a peep
through this hole, we behold the
Declaration of American independence,
writteu and sealed
with the blood of patriots, and
looking a little farther we get a
plain view of the constitution ot
the United States of America,
and we are thereby reminded of
the (act that we are citizens of
America, the greatest country in
the world; the country that ad.
vocates equal rights to all and
special privileges to none; that
all men are free and equal before
the law : the country that guarantees
to every citizen, though
his calling or position in lite may
be ever so humble, the right of
just and wholesome criticism :
without the exercise of this, our
great country, the light and hope
ot the world would, soon retrograde
to such an extent as to
become overshadowed and darkened
by crimes and tyranny,
such as marked tne most dismal
periods of nations of antiquity.
Hole No. 4. Around this hole,
*?e ifiiu warnings 01 tne danger
of adverse criticism, in destroying
"the respect and confidence
of the people in the courts of the
land." As we gaze through this
hole, what do we see? Thousands
of patriotic citizens, who
love right and justice, throughout
the coifnty, throughout the
state, throughout the nation,
who are shocked at such a verdict!
These cannot be silent !
They are deploring and expiessing
their condemnation of such
a miscarriage of justice, in tones
which cannot be misunderstood;
which is not only their god-given
right but their duty ss well.
These mighty hosts who are
turning the x-rays of criticism
unou the jury's verdict are not
the ones who are inv tiug chaos

they are the sentinels on the
watch tower of justice, murmurini

held their peace, why, the very
rocks would cry out, shame!
