Gastonia this a'ternoon of the fi
attempt of Miss Belle Nichols, a b
well-known youtig lady of Gro- n
\er, a small town a tliort dit-- $
tance below King's Mountain J ri
to commit suicide yesterday. The p
effort at sell-destruction was due w
to a fit of mental derangement ci
to which she has been subject (or tl
several months. Miss Nichols
had been under the treatment ii
of physicians for the past three n
or four months, but recently
returned to her father's home b
near Grover, apparently very c<
much improved. Yesterday T
morning she borrowed her fath- b

she wanted it to trim her finger ?
nails. A short time atterward o<
she mysteriously disappeared L
Irom the premises. T?e alarm
was sent out and a searching j
party consisting of about thirtyfive
people \vaj organized and a

Alter several hours the young ^
woman was found late yesterday
afternoon, wandering around in
a patch of words near the town.
She had cut her lelt breast open,
stabbed herself near the heart
and slashed herselt a number of *
times on the neck. She ha 1 re- ^
moved her shoes and had wany
dered around, apparently crazed,
but thinly clad.
