Agricultural
How to Raise Turkeys Successlully.
The Progressive Farmer.
To ri'ise turkeys successfully,
cue should have good healthy
slock, not loo tat. Ua her the
eggs every evening especially
while the weather is cold, that
tliey may not pet chilled.
SITTING AND HATCHING.
When the hen gets broody, bring
h? r to the house and confine her
in a pen or lv use where nothing
cm bother her, dusting her with
insect powder when set and
again when taken off with the
little turkeys." I make my insect
powder from in lies, sulphur,
snuff an 1 camphor balls.
When the hen hatches do no'
disturb her, except to take the
empty shells from the nest so
they will not get stuck on the
eggs l::ai have not hatched.
When she is through hatching,
let cue little ones s'ny in 'he
rvl .rrt she haic.imd them until 1
they are several days old. They
will begin to hunt for something
t'> eat as No^n a5 they need anything.
Then take them away
from the house where the chick
ens cannot run over them, and
j)ut th?-rn down and feed a little.

Crumbled fine for the first, leed,
then egg-bread, mi'k curd, or
Cnld biscuit, feeding twice daily.
By your giving feed to them at
a certain time every 'lay, they
w ill soon watch f >r you and will
to at the feeding place. When
they ar<-> lour weeks old, 'he lvn

ly on' of danger by this time,
except from owls, hawks, 'possums,
and dog-; but it they seem
stupid and their wings hung
down, they are iou y, and should
be dusiel with imect powder, or
greased a little under the wings
and in the quills of the wing
feathers.
I seldom ever feed anything
except coid bread of any sort
that we have left and milfc curd,
bread once per day, and milk
curd once, until cold weather
insects get scarcer. Then begin j
lo teed grain?corn and oats.'
Ttiey will not eat grain until in-,
soots are gone.
UKT THE (>LT) 1IEN HAVE Til ICM.
3om advise keeping the old
tu key hen confined tor several
weeks after hatching, but I nev
er had ve^y good success when
} opt up longer than tour or five
days. I tafce mine when they
are (wo or thrae days old and
put them dow.'t in Ihe pasture,
which is covered with short Japan
clovor and carpet gi asi. They
pot pretty well drabbled sometimes;
but they tell thoir m ailer
about it, aud sho aits down and
hovers them till they get warm,!
when they start, to racing ftfUr
grasshoppers again. Some advise
using only two-year, or older,
stock tor breeding purposes;
but. 1 do not seo much difference
in the number raised Irom twoyear
or older stock, and thenum
ber raised Irom one-year old
stock or younger.

THEY ARBNATURAL B RN RAMBLERS.
I raise from seventy-five lo
one hundred and ten every vear;

and would rake more if I did no
seli po many oyg*. 1 think the
reason ro many failures are made
with furkeys, is they are killed
with kindnens, by being kept
confined and fed too much. It
is natural for turkeys to ramble
about and catch insects; and, I
think, the more we follow nature
in raising turkeys, tno better
success v\e have.
