"Why the Plows Should Run f
in Fall and Winter. c

The Progressive Farmer.
When crops are all gathered
in the fall aid everything is 1
snug for winter, then is the time,
we think, to begin the work oi
\ /eparing for the next year's
corn crop on heavy clay soils. I
know the point is made by point
that land plowed during the
v. inter loses much of its fertility
before spring, but in practice we
haven't found this to be, the cast
011 our lands. Anyway, we have
found that a sod broken deeply
during the winter will product
for us a belter crop of com than
the same class of land will if lef
unbroken until abou' planting
time.
EARLY BREAKING HAS MANY ADVANTAGES.

the land deeper and in narrower
furrows, ttie team is hard and
strong from their year's work;
the weather is cool and the hors
es are not so easily injured as

stumps, etc. Bur the greatest advantage
to our mind is, that this

Another advantage of winter
plowing is that thousands of de-truetive
worms and insects are
killed by the freezing of the
fresh plowed land, and this same
freezing tejids to break up the
top part of the furrows.

Then in the spring this loose
' md, when the crops'plowing is
done, is deposited in the bottom
of the furrow and the underside
hi the slices brought to the top
where they may be broken finely
by the harrows so that when
the land is planted the plant
roots will have a well pulverized
?oil to feed in to the very bottom
of the lu'Tow. Tiiis condition
not only t^nds to tree the plan'
food in the soil, but allows for
hotter capillary work, whereby
ilie t ub?soil moisture is more
readily brought to the surface for
use of the plants when drouth
threatens their full development.

having it all crowded into the

think our farmers should realize
