The Texas Uotton Crop is
Short.
There in much evidence coming
to light to corroborate the
Btatemeut made by President
Neill of the Texas Farmers' Union
in our i?sue last week,
namely, that the Texas cotton
crop is only 45 or 50 per cent ol
an average cron. Prni W n
Welborn, College Station, Texas,
writing us in regard to the
boll weevil, for example, declares
in the course pf his letter :
"This year the weevil lias
been very destructive; and along
with other unfavorable condi
tions, has made the cotton crop
ol Texas very short?so short
that J, believe if the trade knew
how short.it is, cotton would go
to sixteen cents a pound. Last
winter was favorable to large
numbers of weevils living over,
and then cotton was late
starting last spring."?Progressive

in Columbia.
Columbia special in Charlotte
Observer: While searchiug for
emply bottles in a deep gully
just behind the street car waitinn
station, at the foot, of Gor
vias street, today a 10-year old
lad named John Wattt discover
ed the bodv of a new born white
infant, which had evidently been
smothered to death. Cotton |
cloth was wound about the up- '
per part of the body, and there
was a bruise the size of half dollar
on the forehead, while the )
face showed the congestion I ha'
results from strangulation. The
limbs were encased in newspapers.
The Watts boy, frightened
by his gruesome find, called
his mother to the scene, and the
police were notified. Coroner
Walker is trying to probe the
mystery, but so tar has not developed
a plausible theory, even as
I to identification.
