Progressive Farmer. ^
Nearly every farmer lias to ^
have some -or! of a water trough
Some will convrnc' them of
of plank, others will chop out a
log, while a lew will tike the
horses to a mud hole and av< id
all trouble. Now, if you have l*a
hmthp used a c< ncrele water hy
trough, you don't know what e;1
a great improvement, i; is over hu
other ports. But you say
at once, "That's all right hu
for the fancy farmer, but 1 have C?
to make my living farming". |>li
Well, so do I. And that it ex- cit
ac'ly why I can't be forever (toiog
tlii ?gs over and over; mu^t as
have lime to woik at farming. ho
However, a cement water ge'
trough is not as expensive as it V{
looks by a good deal. That solid sc<
substantial appear.nice and ever- ?h
lasting qna'ity are two of the he
things the farmer can get with nn
a very small outlay of cash when Be
he once knows how to do (lie wn
work. d i
Here is how we made ours four j be
years ago this fall. We had {l (
ahi u' halt a load 01 good coarse j^4J
creek sand lelt ( ver from auoth- hk
er job we had been at. The man hit
was hauling, rock again that day ?f
so wo had him to dump a cart "G
load near where we wanted our foi

trough to he. We fixed up i
mortar box thr< e feet by four, out j'??
in this two bucket-; of sand and I
one of best Portland cement,
then more sand and cement,* un tv
til there was about six bushels of 8,1
the pile. We then shoveled this 'u
over four times so the sand and w'
cement was very thoroughly rh
mixed. The next move was to tvv
make two boxes 24 inches high m
?one three feet bv seven teet, &
the other two feet by six teet?
both inside measure. Neither no
box had any bottom. The first nt;
was set right on top ol the ground m
where we wished our trough to fibe
located and tho other set, in- ja;
sine of (he first, so there was a 8,1
six-inch space all around between Pr
the two boxes. Now we sprink- i"
led about a bushel of the cement ?n

the two b >X-H, then pounded nt
down all the rocks into the ce
merit- thai we.could and si ill have CO
the concrete cover all. This tn
made about six inches doep of hi
concrete in our space. in
We then g >t an old | iece of j U
one-halt inch iron rod, about 20 hi
fret long, bent it the shape our . .
trough was to he and lml it in St
on top ot the concrete already r<*
in ; mixed s >me more concrete, re

rock until the space was fill' lo i

the inside box (made so it would
come apart easily,) dumped a
couple of bushels of wet cement
in the bottom of the inclosura, fJ
pounded in a lot more rock. *

troweled otT the entire inside
smooth, and our trough was done A ]
at a cost of $2.80 cash and one Wl
