Financial Scare in New
York-?Biggest Run on
Bank in a Generation.
New York, Oct 22.?Credit,
the under-the-smface foundation
of all business, trembled for a
time today and before confidence
could be restored the Iinicker
bocker Trust Company, Now
York's second largest iiuanc'al
ins i!ntion, had emptied its
cash vaolts under pressure of
the biggest run txperienced here
ill a generation; a stock exchange
firm had failed lor $6,000,000;
Wall Street'9 principal securities
had settle'! from $5 to $8 a
share ; call money had riseu to
70 per cent, and local hankers,
unab'e to stem the tide of distrust,
had been forced to appeal
for relief to the Secretary oi the
Treasury at Washington.
All this was in the lace of reassuring
statements by the acting
State superintendent of
banks that the suspected bank
was solvont ; declarations by
prominent, bankers that there
was no true basis for alarm, and
assurances from Washington
that Secretary Cortelyou would
not hesitate to act promptly in
any f-ituatioo where legitimate
business was threatened. Now
that the first scare iv over and J
the worst of tl>e tulure discounted,
i? is believed that local bankinir
affairs will soon readjust
themselves.
