Dastardly Attempt to Kill
an Ex-Sheriff.
Baker City, Ore., Got. 3.?An
attempt was made last night to
assassinate former Sheriff Haivey
K. Brown at his home in
this city by blowing htm up
with a dynamite bomb. One of
Brown'" legs whs blown off, one
arm whs badly mutilated and
internal injuries were sustained.
The outrage was similar in
manner of execuiion to that
which resulted in the death of
former Gov. Steunenberg a'
. Ca'dwell, Idaho. Brown was reluming
home and as lie opened
his gale the bomb exploded. The
expiofion was heard in the ceil
ter of the town half a mile awav.
Brown was found lying on the
sidewala several feet from hip.

Death of Mrs. T. H. Benton.
Mrs. Martha Benton, wife of
Mr. Thomas II Benton, of IJnionville,
died Saturday niorniue
at 9:30. Old age was the primary
cause of death. She was seventyseven
years-ami two months old.
The funeral was held at Meadow
Branch Sunday afternoon by
Rev. J. L. Bennett and Hev J.
A. Bivena. One oftlie largest
gatherings ever as-embled at
