Hearts for Farmers' Wives.
Though we may not. agree
with Mr. Roosevelt in all that
he says, yet I think every one of
us will agree with thin sentiment
of his : UI have mighty
little use for the man who is

who does not 'think anything at
all of having a sixteen-hour day
for his wife."
Many of our husbands are
really unconscious ot our overhou
& work. They haw their
mothers work lit'tally from he
fore sunrise to far beyond sun3et,
a''d so our doing likewise
appears quite proper, ju9t right.
One frequently hears or reads
ot wives striking for this or that
thing; 1 strenuously object to
wives striking for anything The
average man loves his wifo and
wants to see her happy. So in
this matter of over-work, L hold
t^at if each over-worked woman
who reads this page, will sit
down and quietly, reasonably,
not petulantly nor complainiugly,
tell her husband of the se
were strain of work, lie will
put hia mind upon her affair
and soon contrive ways and
mean* of lightening her tasks.
He himself will lend a helping
hand in many a household task;
lie will not exact hot meals three
times a dav during summer
weather; will c'leanse his muddy
boots before entering the house ;
in fact, to sum up the whole
subject in a few words, he will
put his mind on her affairs, and
that once accomplished, the door
is opened to an easier lite for
the whole household.

living on earth."
Both men's and women's drudg
ery on the farm will ba greatly
lessened when as much brain,
thought, management, and care
are devoted to affairs ol the country
as have heretofore been put
upon affairs of the town and |
city.
The interest of the country
woman is and should be as broad
as that of her town friends, and
so just a word to theyoung men :

sweetest girls in the world as
mistresses of farm homes you'll
have to give them a little more
th ?n your lather gave your

home, and in offering her a home,

handed down a decis on today
unanimously sustaining the
decree of Justice Wools i? refusing
an injunction against the
Slate hoard of educaliou when

a half million dollur contract
with certain book publishers for
the school book supply of the
Slate for a period of five years.
This contract established a
radical departure trom the method
of buving books for a fiveyear
period. Under the new contract
the State board decided
upon an official list to be used
mi the common schools of the
S'ate tor a period of live yea s,
these hooka to be handled
through a central depository at
Columbia, which in turn sells
them to sub-depositories through
out the Sia'e, the central depository
to realize 10 per cent, and
the sub-deposiiories to cet 10
percent more. The contract with
the publishers requires each
book to be stamped "South Caro
lina edition," and the retail
price list established by the
board printed beneath these
words. Any depository selling
above the list price makes the
publisher liable on his bond.
The action was brought in the
name of two citizens of the State,
but the understanding has been
that certain publishers whose
bids were not accepted were
back of the proceeding. It was
argued for the petitioners that
the depository scheme was in
violation of law and that the
school patrons would have to
pay more than uuder the old
system. Superintendent Martin
and others of the board, however,
contended that a saving of
about $100,000 would be saved
in the period of five years, and
that the scheme prevented retail
dealers from charging too much
for books.
