The Phillips Murder Mystery.
Cleveland, O , Sept. 22.?The
county coroner rendered a verdict
in the rr\ o oi John J. Phillips,
the banker and broker, who,
it is alleged, was shut and killed
at his home by h burglar on
September 2nd. The coroner
places no credence in the assertion
that Phillips was killed by
a burirlar.
"We believe and do find,"
says the verdict, "that John J.
Phillips was shot in the neck by
the discharge of a gun iu the
hands of some person within his
(John J. Phillips') residence
with intent to minder on the
morning ot September 2nd, and
that John J. Phillips died as a
direct result of a gunshot wound
in ihe neck."

Death in Bethune.

: Mrs. Christine Truesdeil,
wife of Mr. Ernest Trueadell, died
Saturday night at 10 o'clock in
Columbia, where she was taken
about tour months ago for treatment.
Mrs. Truosdell had been
in bad health for several months,
and while her dea h has been
expected lor some tune it was a
great sln-ck to her relatives and
friends. She was 23 years of
age, and leaveN a husband and
a ten month?-o)d baby boy. She
was the fourth daughter of Mr.
N. A. Bethune, a prominent
citizen of our town
Brutal Murder in Texas.
UalHs, lex., Sept. 23.?The
body of Carl Mabrey, of Abilene,
lex., evidently murdered Saturday
night, was found early today
in a clump of bushes near the
Texas & Pacific Railway's entrance
to the city. The murder
was brutal in the extreme. The
throat was cut trom ear to ear,
the skull fractured and the knile
was plunged seventeen times into
the heart. Robbery is believed)
to have been the motive. |.
A blacksmith living nearby in-)
formed the police that about 8:30
o'clock Saturday night he heard
someone cy 'Oh, Lord, Oh,
Lord," but thought the cry came
from boys at play.

Woman Tortured to Death
by Religious Fanatics.
Chicago, Sept. 22. ? Five people,
members of the sect Par
hamites, are under arrest iu Zion
Oily accused of torturing to death
Mrs. LeilaGieenhaulgh, 64 years
old, to show their belief in the
religion they proles*.
The people under arrest are
Walter and Jennie Greenhaulgh,
the son and daughter of the woman
; Harold Mi'chell, Mrs. Harold
Mitchell and a Mrs. Smith.
All of them are accused of manslaughter.
Mrp. Greenhaulgh had been
for twenty years an invalid suf
lering from paralysis and rheumatism.
The condition of Mrs. Greenhaulgh
convinced her sui and
daughter and the three persons
arrested with them that she must
he possessed of the devil and
thev determined to exorcise ihe
evil spirit. The five knelt by
fhebedside, and after prayer, com
menced their work. The armi o
Airs. Uroenliaulgh, stiffened by
rheumatism, were jerked and
twisted about in order that the
evil spirit might be driven out.
Mrs. Greenhaulgh died.
