Cotton and Its Power
for Good---Why Farmers
Should Stand for Best
Prices.
Manufacturers' Record: The
cotton growers of the South

the speculators. The world can
take every bale of their cotton,

higher than at present.
The English papers are full of
the tremendous boom in Britian's
ooa' tnde, many of the large
producers having Bold their entire
expected output of 190S.
Miners' wages are at the maximum,
and the operators are
struggling to fiu<l more men
England's iron and steel trade
is in the same condition, with
steel rails selling at more than
$3 a ton above the price which
our steelmakers are getting. Ou
the Continent somewhat similar
conditions prevail, and in Asia
there is widespread awakening,
with reports of advancing prices
of building materials and of labor.
The splendid prices which
the grain-growers of the West
and the cattle-raisers of the conn
try are getting assure their ability
to be better consumers than
ever before. Under such condi
tions the South should receive
the very highest prices for its
oolton. It holds a world monopoly,
and il would be false to its
own prosperity, to its best educational
developrneut, to the betterment
of all its people, if it did
notunitedly struggle to secure the
highest possible price for rs cotton.
If the people of this section
would see it blossom as a rose,
if they would see every farmhouse
improved and ma le more
attractive, if they would see tens
of thousands of new dwellings on
tho farms and in the cities with
every modern convenience for
lessening the labor of the housekeepers,
if they would see an era
of good road construction, if they
would 86J schools and churches
everywhere, then let them realize
that good prices, high prices as
compared with the 10 years of
starvation prices ending in 1902,
would mean all these things, and
that properly handled the South
has this situation absolutely
within its own control. Ten years
ago the cotton crop, s? ed iuclud
cd, averaged about $350,000,000
year. Last year it was worth
over $800,000,000, and this year
it should command $900,000,000.
Consider for a moment what this
vast difference of $500,000,000
or more a year m ans. It is a
mighty fertilizing p;>v\er which
will enrich the sod of Southern
business life and bring forth a
harvest of abounding prosperity.

When Adam Got Home

pounds, most of which is very
