The Devil's Bible.
New York Bress.
The volume which is called
"the devil's Bible,'' is iu the library
ol the royal palace of Sweden.
It is a huge copy of Ihe
Scriptures written on 300 prepared
asses' skins. One report
says that it took 500 years to
complete this copy, which is so
large that it has a table by itself.
Another tradition says that it
was completed in a night, due
to the assistance ot his Satanic
majesty, who, when the woik
was finished, gave the monk a
portrait of himself for a frontispiece.
The illuminated likeness
of the devil still adorns the front
page of the work. This volume
$~as carried off by the Swedes
in the Thirty Years' War from a
convent in Prague.
There are a great many people who have
slight attacks of indigestion and dyspepsia

The Russian newspaper Rodna
Dielo reproduces from the original
a curious de?d of transfer
which will help to wart a realization
of the menial condition of
the Russian peasantry. A former
deputy for the district of Tutioroff,
in the province of Taurida,
sent the original to the newspaper.
The document runs : 'd, the
undersigued,| Nicolai Nicepho-o
vitch, peasant, 38 years of age,
of the Dogmarovski district ol
Melitopol, have fallen into evil
days. I ?m at the end of all ray
resources, and hereby certify
that I have sold for the sura of
50 rubles mv eternal salvation
and place in the Kingdom ol
Heaven to Makar Selenky." The
signature is attested by one elder
of the village council.

l>ear Sir : I f yon should bake bread
that people like butter than any other,
and at less cost by the day, you'd have
a pretty-good business, wouldn't you?
We have just such a business a* that
in paint; a gallon goes further than
any other gallon of paint in the country?that's
bread at less cost, by the
day; but the difference isn't so small
as it is in bread. And a job wears
longer?that's bread at less cost by
the year. People hate to paint; it
costs money to paint; and they bate
the fuss. They line our bread by the
year.
If jour bread is better than anybodyelse's,
and costs less too, y .u've
got a good trade; for people d ? lik*>
good bre-.d, and people like money, it
doesn't take long to tlnd-out; give
'em time.
Rut you can't bake better-than-anybody-else's
bread for half the usual
price for a breakfast, can you?
Devoe is just such paint as that
The price by the gallon or loaf Is no
matter t ount by the day, week, month.
