Tar Heels Interested in South
Carolina's Negro Who
^ Preaches in His Sleep.

of the most unusual cases ever
heard of, and why this man is
not on exhibition with some
show crowd is astonishing
The story is told by Mr. E. M.
Hicks, ot Statesville, who travels
for the Bay State Whip Company,
ot Massachusetts. Mr.
Hicks is now at his home here
for a short ?tay. This unusual
case fell under hi8 oboeryation
while he was in South Carolina
about three weoks ago and although
many know of it nothing
has been said in the pipers
about it.
Six miles from Batesburg, S.
C-, lives a negro farmer about 50
yonrs old, who every night
conducts a regular religious ser
vice while he is in some sort ot
a hypnotic state, and the strangest
part of the story is that the
negro has been doing this regularly
tor twenty-seven years. The
case has attracted much attention
and Mr. Hicks drove out tc
the negro's home one night tc
hear him. The man goes to bed
about 9 o'clock and soon aflei
be goes to sleep the performance
begins and be cannot be awakened
until he has completed.
Mr. Llicks says the night he
wa9 there the negro eang twe
songs, prayed a long prayer and
then preached, what he says,
was a good, sensible sermon
During the preaching he was
seized with some kind of convulsion,
something like a spasm,
but h;s wife rubbed his face and
neck with some camphor and
he wont on with his sermon,
starting in the middle of iht
sentence where he had left ofl
when ihe convulsion came. He
never preaches the same
over twice and always announces
when he begins that he is going
to noof a sermon h? has h"nrd
preached.
Mr. Hicks pays that physicians
have studied the negro's cast
and have tried to wake him dt'r
ing the performance,but in vain
They say he is. in a hypnotic
state; but just why or how i<
?A comes on him at these regular
periods and affects him in the
same way, they cannot under
stand.
The negro is just a plain,
hard- working and ignorant farmer
and charges i.o admittance
fr-e to his home during the
strange performance. He can't
read when he is awake and
breaks down when he attempts
to pray in public or make any

Noted Bob Jones Recalls
Story of a Famous Edgefield
Case.

previous governors, including
Governor Heyward during his
recent term, but Governor Ansel
will follow his custom and give
the cose his usual careful consideration.
The case of R T. Jones is one
of the most celebrated in the
criminal annals of South Caro
linn. He was tried live or six
; ::nes before lie was finally sent
t the penitentiary for 21 years.
His term will expire in 1910
and it he ia not pardoned he has
only ubout two years yet to
seive since he will be given
credit for good behavior. He has
> made a model prisoner and the
penitentiary authorities are uu>
derstood to favor his pardon.
In 1885 a dispute arose be*
tween Jones aud his relatives by
> marriage, the l'resslevs, over
1 the division of a tract of land in
" Edgefield countyjj^which they
1 had bought together from the
- Sinking Fund Commission. Jones
Ijud himself paid the first pay
) raeut on the land and it. was
) claimed that the Pressleys had
1 not complied with their agreeilraent
to pay the balance and
I that they tried to take posession
1 of the portion allotted to Jones.
When they came upon his laud
? Jones went into the field with a
' shot gun and shot Charley

' and Jones started to run but

i instantly. Jones next met the
' father, E Iward Pressley, a man
> of 78 years of age and shaking

old man's grand-daughter and
' when he metliim he said: "Graud
5 pa, I believe I will kill you, too"
and shot the old man in his
tracks. The third son, John, was

that reason escaped the exterminator.
Jones went to Edgefield Court
House and surrendered. He was
placed in jail with seventeen
other white men who were then
under arrest charged with participating
in the lynching of
loles Culbreath, white man who
had been suspected of killing a
neighbor from ambush. The
1 seventeen alleged lynchers were
acquitted, being defended by
Gen. M. C. Butler.
Jones did not have as good
luck aa his fellow prisoners. As

i trials, one of which resulted in

25 years. An appeal was taken

! mistrials ensued and finally the

Judge Fraser for the killing of
the old man and twns convicted
of manslaughter, being given a
term of 21 yearn.
