New York, Sept. 11.? Physicians
at the Kings County hospital,
Brooklyn, have the most remarkable
case of that rare disease
elephantiasis. The patient
is Mrs. Juliette Felt of Brooklyn
a widow, 63 year9 old. Before
she was attacked by the disease
she weighed 149 pounds. She
now weighs 525 pounds and it
gaining daily in size. Her skin
is thick, hard and coarse, like
an elephant's.
The disease first manifested
itself seven yetrs ago. It begar
with an itching in one of hei
legs. This ceased alter a time
but it was presently followed b\
a swelling ot the limb, accompanied
by pain. Then *die toot
on weight rapidly. The body
arm* and leg* have been the parti
affected, but not tier face. Slu
thought herself growing tat from
natural causes, but could not ac
count for the pain which attend
r ed her increase in bulk. Tw<
years ago she lound she weighed
350 pounds and then in alarm
she resorted to medicines hoc
dieting hut these measures wen
ot 110 avail. A week ago a phy

the reunion of Confederal** veterans
which was held in Columbia
last spring me! today to wind
up the affairs relating to (he reunion.
Capt. Starling, treasurer
of the commission, charged with
the expenditure of the appropriation
of $3,500 made by the
legislature for the expenses of
the reunion reported that he
had expended tor that purpose
about $2,200 aud there is a bal^
ance on hand of $1,300. Of
course thi9 saving was made
possible only by reason of the
fact that the citizens of Columbia
raised a fund to supplement the
stale fund and out of this Columbia
fund a number of the expenses
were paid. There is also a
balance of a few hundred dollars
in the city fund and by resolution
of the committee the treasurer ol
the committee was iu-tructed to
turn this balance into the treas
ury of the Chamberof Commerce,
under the auspices of which tlit
fund was raised. The committer
after closing all accounts theu
adjourned sine die. '
