Charles Varrell's flit early last.
Friday morning.
The police on Saturday declared
that Huffman was the
murderer of Sophy Heckler, a
servant girl found dead August
3rd, and to-night they announce
the belief that he also murdered
Mrs. Lena Sebum, who was
killed in Brooklyn August 20th.
Among the jewelry in the
room Hoffman had occupied for
some time before he was killed,
were a pair of ear rings which
were to-day positively identi
lied.
Samuel Wineberg, a tailor
whose shop is on the ground
floor of the building in which
Hoffman roomed after the killing
ot Sophy heckler, to day identified
Hoffman's body as that of a
man who went to his shop on
August 21st, the day after Mrs
Schum was killed, wi'h a coa<
which he wanted cleaned. The
coat, Wineberg said, was badly
blood stained.
Hoffman's method, like that
of Hoch, the police say, was to
make the acquaintance of wof
men ot his own nationality and
by pretending a desire to marry
them secure the opportunity ol
robbing and if necessary killing
them.
Hoffman entered the Varrell
flat early last Friday morning
and attempted to kill the entire
Varrell family by turning or
the gas. When this was discovered
and the family retired agair
he once more entered the flat
and turned on the gas. A short
time after the second attempt
was discovered Varrell saw
Hoffmtn in the flat and shot anc
killed him.

condition ot the cotton crop, lie
say8 it will be damaged in Georgia
by from 25 to 40 ner cent.
His view Is based upon actual
conditions as be observed them,
and is not promp'ed by any ef
lort to boost tbe price, or bull
the market.
' The cotton crop in Georgia
will not exceed 1,500,000 b iles,"
said Commissioner Hudson.
"Three weeks am> there was
every reason to believe that we
would raise between 1.800,000
and 3,000.000, but the farmers
of the sta'e will be lucky if the
crop yields over a million and a
half bales, in my opinion.
"1 have never in all of my
experience with farming seen
such havoc done in so short a
time," he continued. "The cot
ton crop in many sections has
been literally burned up, and
everywhere it has b^en damaged
more or less bv the heat and
drouth. Some of it looks as if a
fire had boeu built and burned
under the stalks.
