r " ' o Agricultural Don't Gin Cotton too Soon. Progressive Farmer. The subject of cotton handling 'old grating is one now upper j^ost in the mind-* of all farmers,I and is one that should receive unlimited aitennon ami ?u cu-sion. The handling ami grading of cotton should begin with the picking. Cotton isoi'cn harvested wet and much ? f the early picking is green. The farmer rushes this wet, green stull to ill" gin, where the stapie is ruined in the g'uning. The proper way to do is to keep this wet green c >Uon till if drit > and matures. Cotton will gain boh in weight and quality by holding in the seed. It is an unquestioned fact that cotton held in the see i will gain about one-tenth in weight for the iirst three months after picking. AT this rate, seedcottou that would yield fiy, hundred pounds of Mut ginned when it is picked will give five hun '.red and tit y pounds of lint if kept for three m mtiis before ginning. Cotton should rot be ginned as-oon as picked. The loss wi 1 amount to at least $5 per bale in weight alone ii giui.ed inline " c " # ^ ^ I diately after picking. 1"l?e staple j will amount to a loss ot more ; than one cent a pound in ! price. A b i'.e ot cotton that will bring $50 when tinned when picked will bring $60 or more on a siiuiliar market if _ nue 1 three months after pick in jr. the lint continues to grow in weimt and quality ui er picking j up to about thiee months. Another advantage in holding the cotton in the see l is that here can be no report made ot ttie number oi bales ginned an i he speculator is thus kept in ignorance and prevented fiom de?v *1>a t? i rl'.it at ^allin MA o J1 II ^ I 11 v u?rti IVVI O V lime to the detriment cf the producers. The trouble ?vith the market is not due entirely to the specula'or. llig fiel l of speculation extends only as far a* th f irmer a.lows and no further.
