(From the News and Courier.) {
We 80irietirr.es (ear thai our
Northern judges do not quite ap- t
preciate the friendly relations '
exi^tinn b jtiveen the better white ^
and colored people in the South.
They never lose the opportunity v
of exaggerating the race outrages
that are committed in this part |
of the country. They d^licht to (
dwell upou our deeds ot violence
and bloodsh.ed. They invariably \
speak with a "holier-than-thou"
enthusiasm of the iaclc of South- r
civilization, and in the.rzeel c

they ure utterly oblivious of the a
good neighborhood generally oh j,
taining between (he whiles and )
blacks in tlie South. c
Ou Thursday, August 15, there
was a mogt impressive service in j 1
the little cemetery at Lancaster, ?
S. O., in which the colored dead i
are buried. It centered about c
the unveiling; ol a monument j
erected by the members of Mount i
Moriah Church, a colored Meth- >
odist organiz ition, in memory oi h
the la<e James W. Williams, a s
prominent, white farmer of that 1
county, who deeded the land now e
composing the cemetery to this
Church. The monument is built t
of Vermont, marbe, is six feet, c
eight inch s in height, and con- s
tains among oilier inscriptions v
the following : c
4 On motion of Jarvis Cunning- !
liarn this monument was erected j ?
by the members ot Mount Moriah v
Church in 1907 to the memory a
ot Mr. damns W Williumo !

Church by him and his family o!
this plat of ground for the cemetery."
The ceremonies attending the
unveiling were, as we have noted,
of a very impressive character,
and the veil covering the monu- j
inent was drawn aside by two
small colored girls. Mr. Will- (
iaras, the man so honored by his
colored fellow citizens, was a
11
Confederate soldier in Butler's
c
Brigade during the War for i v
Southern Independence lie was
a slaveholder, always kind and
humane to his people, and after:
their emancipation ever treated j *
them with the greatest fairness j
and justice. It was their desire, j
and the desire of those who knew ^
the generous friendship of this
most worthy gentleman, to build
a monument that would perpetuate
his memory for all time.
I c
Some years ago, it will be remembered,
Bishop Isom C. Clinion,
an eminent man of his race,
