The following is the text of the pure tood law passed at the 1 :ist session of the Legislature, which goes into t fleet next Tuesday, Aug. 20, being six months from the date ol its approval by the Governor: An Act to prohibit 'ne manufacture or sale of adulterated or misbranded or poisonous or deleterious foods or drugs. /' \ Be it enacted by the General Assembly of the State of South Carolina: Section 1. That it shall he unlawful for any person to manufacture or sell, or elTer for sale, auy article of food or drills which is adulterated or misbranded within the meaning of* this Act, and anv person who shall violate * 1 any of the provisions of this section shall be deemed guilty of a -t * j ~ .... .1 iiiiPuciucnuur, elII1 A IIJMMI u?uvii;tion thereof shall be punished by fine not exceeding fifty dollars or by imprisonment no? exceeding fifteen days lor tlio first offence, and one hundred dollars or thirty days' imprisonment lor each subsequent offence. Section 2. That the term "drug," as used in this Act, shall include all medicines and preparations recognized in the United States Pharmacopoeia or National Formulary or U. S. r?ianonaa.tnry lor internal or external use, and any substance or mixture of substances intended A_ I J ! , . io ue useu I ?r ine cure, muigauon or prevention of disease of either man or other animals. The term "food," as used herein, shall include all articles used tor food, drink, confectionery, or condiment by man or other animals, whether simple, mixed or compound. Section 3. That for the purpose of this Act an article shall be deemed to be adulterated: In case of drugs and llavoring extracts: First. If, when a drug or flavoring extract is sold under or by a name recognized in the United States Pharmacopoeia or National Formulary or U. S. Dispensatory, it differs from or does not conform to the standard of strength, quality or purity, as determined by the test laid down in the United States Phar macopoeia, National Formulary, or U. S. Dispensatory, official at the lime ot investigation. In the case of confectionery: ft if contains terra alba, baryles, talc, chrome yellow, or other mineral substance or poisonous color or flavor, or other ingredient deleterious or detrimental to health, or any vinous, malt, or spirituous liquor or compound, or narcotic drug. In the case of food : First. If any substance has been mixed and packed with it so as to reduce or lower or injuriously affect its quality or strength.. Second. If any substance has been substituted wholly or in part for the article. Third. If any valuable constituent of -the article has been Q V' ME HB 3HHBHH MM HJHH * 1 HI wholly or in part abstracted. . Fourth. If it be mixed, colored, powdered, coated or staiuec in a manner whereby damage 01 inferiority is concealed. Filth. Sixth. It it consists in whole or in part of a filthy, dtcuniposed or putrid animal or vegetable substance or any portion of an animal unfit, lor lood, whether manufactured or not. or if it is the product of a dineased animal, or one that has died otherwise than by slaught?r. Section 4.
