He has again got himself
in jail by confessing voluu'arily
a crime which the victim says he
did not commit. It will be recalled
thatNafhan was suspected
of the attempted assault on Miss
Pitman, in Marion County, in
March, and was brought here to
t he penitentiary for sale keeping,
after an alleged mob had looked
for him throughout Marion County.
He confessed to the crime,
but the young lady came here
and looked at the negro at the
penitentiary and said postively
that he was not the man who
had frightened her. Nathan w:.s
he'd here for some time, but as the
Governor was officially informed
that no indictment had ever been
handed out against him the Governor
ordered Superintendent
m- Grillilh of the penitentiary to release
him. A few days later
he got himself in the Columbia
Police court on charge ol vagrancy,
and was told to leave town.
Now lie has gone back to his old
haunts and the Governor has received
a letter from Sheriff Evans,
of Marion, saying that She
rill Burch, of Florence, has turned
him over to him, without anv
warrant or commit ni eut papers,
the same Nathan McClearly for
the attempted assault on Miss
Pitt man, which tie again says he
committed.

1 "Wealthy Old North Carolina
i Hermit Suicides.
Ashevdle special in Tne State:
i Sit'iug in hi? arm chair, with a
! bottle of carbolic acid partially
i emptied by his side, Willam ?J.
. Cleveland, an ancient hermw,
aged 82 years, was f nod dead
i by the side ot his faithful old ne
i negro servant yesterday morn
i ing, at Ins home near Swannanoa
. a1 a ion. A coroner's jury which
i investigated the death returned
a verdict of suicide. The remains
were brought to Ashevdle and
are being held at a local undertaking
establishment awaiting
inalructions from re'a:iv?s ol t he
dead man, in Salem N. Y.
The death of Mr. Cleveland removes
a peculiar and picturesque
figure. For the pa-l 20 years
ho had made his home at Svvannanoa,
living in a little tourroomed
house all alone, attended
by a faithful o'd negro, who looked
after the place, met all visitors
and transacted all business. The
old gentleman living the lite of a
recluse, rarely left the house aud
refused to see any callers. A1
though he lived in a m<>9i miserly
fashion, denying himself at
times even the necessaries of life,
Mr. Cleveland is understood to
have been a rjoh man, his wealth
heing estimated at from $30,
000 to $50,000. The coroner,
who made an examination of the
hou.?e after Mr. Cleveland's
I death, discovered ?<?vcki-ui n.,..
dred dollars hidden away in various
and peculiar places, and let
ters now in the coroner's possession
seem to indicate tha' more
t.hnn a thousand dollars is still
hidden away. Besides the cash
valuable papers were found which
indicates that the old hermit was
the possessor of considerable pro
perty and has left quite a large
estate.
