Charlotte Banks to Consolidate?Former
Lancastrians

theChariotte National Bank, one
of the beat known and most prosperous
institutions in the ei'y,
ami the Charlotte Trust Company,
the youngest of the local
banks, ate to be consolidated
some titne next year under the

The merged institution will
have a capital of at leas' $300.000,
the amount to be determined
by t lie stuck holders. The sur
plus will aggrega'e between
$160,000 and $175,000. Mr B.
I). Hea'h, president of tlie Charlotte
National Bank, will retiie
and it is understood that, Presi
dent J. II Little, of the Trust
Company, will tie elected presi
dent of the consolidated institu-j
tion. Mr. W. H. Twitty will re
main as cashier and Mr. L. II
Hagood, of the Tru t Company,
will likely be'assistant cashier.
The Charlotte National Bank
was organized in 1897 with a
capital of $125,000. Dining the I
10 years ot it* existence, its capita!
has remained the same, no
occasion ever haying arisen when
it was deemed necessary to in
crease it. Mr. B. 1). Heath ha*
been its president all the while
and Mr. W. H. Twitty i's cashier.
On its capi al it has earned
the handsome sum of $203,000
of which $103,000 has been paid
out in cash to the stockholders.

With reference to an article
appearing in yesterday morning's
issue of The Observer to ttie effect
that a merger of the Charlotte
National bank and the Charlotte
Trust Company was probable
next, year, the following statement
from President B. I) Ileath
of the Charlotte National bank is
published. When seen by an Observer
man Mr Heath said:
"I beg to say article appearing
in The Observer of to-day under
the head-lines Banks to Consolidate,
indicating my retirement
from presidency ot 'lie Charlotte
National Bank and naming my
successor, is a new tiling to
me and is without foundation or
fact.
Negro Killed by Lightning.
Aiken special in the News and
Courier: Arner Merritt, a no* ro,
was struck an I instantly killed
yesterday afternoon by lightning
near tlie Palmetto Farms. The
negro was at work when the
storm came up and sought shelter
under a nearby tiee. The
tree was struck soon after and
resulted in the m-tant death of
the man The storm was very
severe and some damage is report*

the country, but this is the only
casualty.

farm of Mr. Jake Thomas, of the

awav. Mr. Valentine went to

two shots, which took elLct

the effects ot which Mr. Valentine
fell mortally wounded. The
[negro then seeing Mr. Carter
near the well, shot him also,
wounding him in the arm and
slightly wounding him in anoth
er part of his body.
