Meadows had sued his wife for
divorce, and young llawley, who >

named in the petition.
"The preacher came back
here from North Carolina, his
home, and was met at the train
by a crowd of men, ot whom he
claimed Meadows was the leader,
and was severe!y horsewhipped.
Then he was put on the train and
ordered never to return.

years, and, notwithstanding the
fact that he is to'allv blind, he
makes himself useful in many

beast. The most wonderful ot
this old darkey's achievements,
however, is his ability to thread
k a needle and sew. He cuts his
own hair, shaves himself, threads

The promise of obedience to
the law by the Southern and the
Atlantic Coast Line railways,
which, since July 1st, the date
>et tortlie law to go into effect,
have been violating the law, was
ziven late to day, at a conference
which the railroads sought
with Governor G.enn, who had
stated that as a precedent to any
agreement he might maae, that
the 2 1-4 cent rate must first be
put into effect.
The railroads wanted a longer
time than the State was willing
>o grant, but finaliy the eighth
uf August was agreed upon, as
the railroad represeua'ive stated
that it would be impossible
sooner to make the proper ar
rangements at their various

Depot Agent A. W. Ellison, by
au unknown negro in her home,
while her husband was attending
to his duties at the station.
Mrs. Ellison had been on the
porch and hearing a noise in her
room went in there, thinking
tliat it was made by the baby. A
lamp was burning in the room,
but in spite of this fa? a negro,
who had concealed nimselt in
the chiset some hours earlier, it
is supposed, grabbed the woman
by the shoulders and attempted
to assault her. A pistol lying
nearby was snatched up by Mrs.
Ellison and an effort made to
shoot the ebony brute but she
was too much excited and lied
from the room, after "getting
loose from the negro, and rushed
out into the yard where she fell
almost unconscious. The negro
fled through a back win low and
made goo 1 his escape.
