6 *" The Farmers' Union. History of the Organization that is Gaining Members at the Rate of 3000 a Day. fhe Anderson correspondent | ot the News and Courier gives! the following interesting history' of the Farmers'Union, the South j Carolina branch of wl ieh held its annual meeting in Greenwood last week, at which ?00 or morel delegates were present : The Union is only tour years j old and wan organized in Texas in 1903, and i's growth lias been marvellous. It has attempt ed to profit by the mistakes o! the Alliance and o'her farmers' organizations, and to bui'd on a better foundation. The mud-sill of the organization is co-operation in buying and selling, and among its tenets is mutual help to members of the Union, lo promote better methods ot farming and an improvement of farm life. The Union is organized in 22 States, and tiie South Carolina branch was organized three years ago. It requires 5,000 members to secure a State organization, and the South Carolina State or 1 ganiz-itiou was only instituted j last year. Anderson County i-i the stronghold ot t he union tor j this State?*he first union in i South Carolina being Septus! Union No. 1, with T. T. Wakefield president. The union now claims 20,000 members in South Carolina, all located above Col umbia. They have no organization in the low country. The Farmers' Union is a secret order, and usually holds monthly meetings. The dues are nominal, only 60 cents per year lor all purposes. There are the national union, State unions, county unions and lnc?! unions. All matters of legislation of the order has to go through all these channels before it can be determined, and a majority rule prevails on all questions. In addition to regular officers, such as presi dent, vice president, etc, the local unions have a business agent, and then there is a head business agent for the county. The main work of the union in this section has been the marketing ot cotton. A member ot the union, or an outsider for that: matter, puts his cotton in th j hands of the county business) agent for sale. The owner of the cotton makes his price he is willing to take. When the business agent can secure that price he sells the cotton. The unions have in this section a system of ware houses' built by members of the unions, but the ware houses are not' union property, but are organized corporations, each separate, un der the laws of the State. These are Ihe only charges made ; in the handling of the staple,j Several thousand bales ot cotton were handled the past season in this manner, and today the business agent sold a lot o! 58 bides for 13^ cents. When a member places his cotton with the business agent for sale lie must abide! the act of the agent, and wheth- ' TJ er I he cotton is in a ware house or not, if he instructs the ascent to sell his cotton at a stated price, and the airent does so, he must deliver the cotton at the time stated under penalty of ex| pulsion from the order. Thus tar, the unions have not bought a great deal in bulk. They state they only cc-operate in buying trust controlled goods, such as fertilizers. Though in cases ihey have b< ugh' flour, etc, in large lots. Tartisan politics are forbidden by the constitution to be disc useed in local ur ions, but a leading union member said ne would always vote for the mail representing his principle*. So while the union may-net be in politics it is closely identified. During the past session ot Sou'li Car ?lina Legislature the Farmers Union, of this county, made an effort to have the lien law repealed but failed. The unions disclaim any connection with the labor unions or any other organization whatever, and claim to operate independently. This was impressed on the founders ot the order by the tact of the wreck of the once powerful Alliance. But if my memory is correct the National Union last year adopted a resolution endorsing the Union Printers in their strike tor eight hours. As the members of the Farmers' Union are mostly emplovers themselves this is likely to cause some awkwaid coraulications should it le brought too close home. But the Union will steer clear of these matters when t ley cotr.e too clo-e. The great fight ot the Union now is the abolishment of cotton exchanges and cotton speculators. They believe the New York Cotton Exchange is against their interest and are fighting for its abolishment, in this mattertney unite with the Western unions for the abolishment of the grain exchanges. They claim it is for the producer to say what lie will take lor his produce and not the speculator, and the advance in the price of cotton the past season has greatly strengthened the Union and the faith ot its memhers. Cotton has brought a heifer price sold in round lots than in smaller quantities. Ware houses are being built ! at many points in this section,; and the day is not tar distant when all cotton will he sold i through ware houses, the same | as tobacco is now. Here is where one of the objects ot the Union comes in: to bring the grower and spinner closer together and eliminate the middle 111 11, to sell their cotton direct to the mill and eliminate speculation.
