Strange Religious Sect Puzzling
New Yorkers?The
Preachers "Fire Forth" in
Many Languages.
Down in 42(1 Street near 8th
Avenue, in Glad Tidings Hall,
a strange religious sect is hold?tttr

and attracting crowds. These
people claim to acquire "Gift of
Tongues" by power of prayer.?
The writer wended his way thither
on Sunday last to see for himself,
with his own eyes and with
his own ears hear these strange
sensationalists. Sister Mabel
Smith, a widow of 27, from Tex
as, is the chief "Preacher." Seventeen
tongues have been given
to her so far and more are expected.
Mrs. Smith is not alone?there
is quite a following, and other
"preachers" in and near ihe city
who have this year been sweep
ing across the country from the
West and South,
These people think themselves
enthused with a Pentacostal
fire which makes them think
they exhort in all the [languages

less" one they claim c?>n be endowed
with I he power to discourse
in every known dialect.
The leader or "preacher"
"comes through" they term if,
and immediately delivers a ser
moil, part in one language, part
in a dozen or more other dialects.
They admit they understated but
one tongue?yet persons present,
may be a German or Frenchman
?Assyrian or Spaniard, declare
that not only the language is
correct but pronunciation is perfect.
Here will be an appeal in
English to turn from the ways ol
the world, then it is tired forth
in French, German, etc. The
writer cannot, account for it. The
speakers admit they do not remember
after it is over what
they said?only, affirming that
they are ''Sinless" and that they
put themselves through a course
of prayer, then in a receptive attitude,
and the "tongues of fire"
are given them-and the message
to deliver.
Sister Smith knows not what
she talk9; according to her own
story, but it has rhyme and cadence
in places anil the gestures
keep up ju9t as though all were
in English. Even the Chinese
get a message.
It is one of the puzzles of these
latter days to understand the
way8 ot the new sect. Followers
are sincere in the belief that
thev are speaking with the
tongues of men and angels. It
is thought by some that the socret
lies in the actual Faming of
some sentences in each language
for llio purpose of deceiving;
others k<give it up'1, and admit it.

Those Mysterious Fires in
Union?Negro Girl Arrested.

noon widiin an hour and a half
at the home of Mr. John W:x, a
well known cilizeu of Buffalo,
which wag followed flu* next day
by four more fires in rapid sue
cession, which were equally as
appearuntly inexplicable, has re
suited in the arrest of a negro
girl on the charge of arson.
The girl is named ?Iloxanna
Meadow, who for some tune'lias
been employed in Mr. Wix's
family. She is ab ?ut 14 years
old and well grown for her
age.
All the circumstances leading
up to her arrest are circumstantial,
but Mr. Wx thinks she is
' ?
undoubtedly the cause of all his
trouble, and while he knows ot
no reason why she should entertain
ill will for any of the family,
lie thinks she must have suddenly
become possessed with a mania
for burning.
Mystery of Rev. "W. A. Kelly.
Hundreds of persons who
knew William Aiken Kelly , at
one time one of the most forceful
and earnest young ministers of the
Methodist Ohurch in South Caro
luia, will be frankly gratified to
learn positively that which only
death could reveal ? namely, that
iiih sirange ana unaccountable
acts which from time to time
marred what would otherwise
have been a brilliant and helpful
career were not the outgrowth
of- any moral turpitude on his
part, but were caused by an
abnormal condition of the brain,
which rendered him mentally
irresponsible for his actions.
Mr. Kelly's strangely checkered
life came to a close in Knox*
vilie, Tenn., on July 23 of this
year. His body was brought to
this city tor interment but I ef j?e
his reipains were laid to rest an
