North Carolina vs. Railroads
? ?Heavy Fine Imposed on
&W Southern.
Kaleifih cor. Charlotte Observer:
* * 4 J S * i ;
The sensational trial of the
Southern Railway Company and
City Ticket. Agent Green for violating
the new Sla?e 2 14 cent
passenger rate law which threatened
an interference of a Federal
court proee^ to a ripest the trial
in the S ate court, terminated
this evening in the State court
with a verdict of guilty both as
to the Southern and Agent Green
and the imposing of .a $30,(100
line on the Southern and a notn
inal fine on Agent Green who
pledged himself not to further
violate the law. Green was given
the choice of abandoning the sale
of tickets and paying a nominal
fine or standing out against the
State court and receiving a sen
tence to prison and possibly to
the chaingang. In choosing to
, pay a fine he stated he telt he
, was guilty of no wrong ; but he
had an aged and ill mother who
could not understand the situation
and, Ie?t further resistance
might embitter her life, lie would
not resist further. The understanding
is that Green will be
given seme other position with
the Southern.
However issues may end lor
the Southern at Asheville the
case will probably be carried
fight up to the United Slates
Supreme Court.

Col. Jim Tillman Injured.
Col. .fame? 11. Tillman, of
Edgefield, met with a serious accident
on Tuecdav night.
He was on the train going
from Clark's Hill to Augusta,
when he stepped forward into the .

baggage car to see if his parcels
had been checked. While there
the car lurched around a curve,
and a heavy trunk fell on his
right foot, crushing several of the
small hones.
He was driven to the Augusta
hospital and will probably be
confined to hi9 ward for several
days, while the bones in his loot
are knitting together again.?
