Jamestown Exposition.

Day at Jamestown Exposition
with Governor Ansel, his
staff, the South Carolina State
commission, the Second Regiment
of Infantry, South Carolina
National Guard and several hundred
South Carolinians present
to participate in the events on
the day's programme. The official
exercises occurred in the
main auditorium building and
were attended by hundreds of
visiting and resident South Carolinians.
The principal addresses
of the day were made by Capt.
William K Gonz des of The Sta'e,
Columbia, S. O.. Gov. Martin F.
Ansel, President Ilarrv St. George
Tucker, of the Jamestown Exposition,
and lion Hazard,ot Georgetown,
S. C.

Following the official ceremonies
the celebration of the day
was continued at the South Carolina
State exhibit in the State's
exhibit palace where the Palmetto
State has an exceptionally
fine exhibit of its products, occupying
almost one entire side of
the palace. South Carolina!

being poured by ladies of the
official South Carolina party and
served by Japanese girls.

Successful Appeal to Merchants
to Stop Selling Cigarettes.
Spartanburg special in Charlotte
Observer : As a result of a
series of religious meetings that
a>e being conducted here by Rev.
Leu. G. xBroughton, of Atlanta,
many merchants of Spartanburg
whohave been haudlingcigaYettes
are goiug out of the cigarette
| business.
Last Sunday afternoon Dr.
mougntou preached a special
sermon to men aud boys and he
told ot the great harm done to
young men bv smoking cigarettes,
tie declares it was one of the
greatest vices to which young
men are addicted to aud he made
a plea for the dealers in cigarettes
to quit the business. Since that
sermon it is learned that quite a
number of dealers have quit selllug
cigarettes. One merchant
even destroyed all the cigurette
paper he had in stock.

the inhabitants of Atlanta being
a peculiar people of habits and
notions not necessarily typical

The opportunities for observation
are naturally limited in Atlanta
and cigaret'es which might
produce a brain storm, race riot,
or Howelliansmiih campaign in
that environment might not in
terlere with a "protracted meeting*'5
elsewhere.
The awkward question obtrudes
itsell : It a man by smoking
50 cigarettes a day become a plain
unmitigated liar and a thief in
ten years, how many cigarettes a
day must he smoke in the same
time in order to become an "angle
iron, sunk-hinge, steel-faced"
liar, or, in the Atlanta language,
a 'Maniliar"? Or it he smoke
only 25 cigarettes a day, will he
require 20 years to get his
diploma? Or if 10 cigarettes a
day will develop a skilful pickpocket,
how many cigarettes
will be required to lift a man
into the Lite Insurance Magnate

this section, died at his home,

Hough of this county. Capt
Hough was 76 years of age. He

Carolina battalion, throughout
the War between the States and
was promoted at Petersburg for
bravery.
