?Sheriff Hunter arrested a
party of six gamblers last. Saturday,

The Judge has been feasting on
the succulent corn for ten days
or more, while in most of the
gardens hereabouts corn is just
in the tasseling stage.
?The infant son of Mr. and
Mrs. S. E. A. Hinson of this
place, died on the 21st ultimo at
the home of Mr. Hinson's father,
Mr. E. M. Hinson, in the Flint
Ridge section, aged 12 months
and 14 days. The burial was at
Union church.
Poat-Offlce Improvement a.
Further improvements are to
be made in Lancaster's postoffice,
at the instanc3of a govern
ment inspector who was here a
few days ago. A metal screen
will be placed on top of the box
[enclosure, extending to the coiling.
A suitable sign will be put
on the front of the building, and
the postmaster will be furnished
with a new and better safo.
The Moriah Union.
The meeting oi the Moriah
Union at Bethlehem church last
Friday, Saturday and Sunday
was well attended, and the discussions
and sermons were much
enjoyed and appreciated by all
present. Judge D. A. Williams
was re elected Moderator,Mr. M.
O. Gardner was elected Secretary
and Mr. G. L. Mobley Clerk.
The next meeting will be held
io Lancaster, at the Second Baptist
church, beginning on Friday
before the 5th Sunday in September.

An Accidental Killinu.
The inquest held in Flat Creek
township a lew days ago by Cor
oner Caskey, referred to in the
last i?6ue of The News, was over
t he body of James Gay le, a young
colored man, who was shot and
killed by Willie Seegars, also
colored. The homicide occurred
on Wednesday at Cross Roads
church, on the line between L >ncaster
and Kershaw counties.?
According to the testimony taken
at the inquest theshooting, which
was done with a pistol, was accidental
and the jury so found.
Cotton Blooms.
The first cotton bloom received
at this office this season was
brought here last Saturday, June
29th,* by Dr. T. J. Strait. It
came trom the farm of Air. Wm. |
McMurray 011 the doctor's Cedar
Creek place.
Mr. D. L. Adams sent *us a
cotton bloom from the Massev
Mill Place the same day, June
29th, but. it failed to reach lhis
office until Monday.
Mr. Roy Cunningham found a
bloom the next day, on the 30th,
on the farm of his father, Mr.
W. J. Cunningham, west of
town.
A Mad l)o(f Scare.
There was some excitement in
Lancaster Sunday over a mad dog,
which was running arau'/k. Tiie
animal, a bird dog which belonged
to Luke Gavin, wa9 finally
shot and killed by Mr. Henry
Sowell, on Elm 6treet. A num
ber of other dogs are said to have
been attacked and bitten by the
mad dog. If such bo the case,
they should either be killed or
confined until the dauger period
is passed. The people of Lancaster
cannot afford to take any
cliancts in a matter of this kind.
One human lite is worth all the
canines in Christendom.

line, in the vicinity of Tir-L.

Friday. He hid been out to one
of his lipids where his bands
weie ploughing in peas, and seeing
a grave being dug in a colored
cemetery near by, walked
there presumably to see who was
to be buried, when he dropped
dead. He was apparently in perfect
hea.th and it is thought that
his death was caused by the
bursting of a blood vessel.
Mr. \Va kup was a son of the
late Harvey Walkup and was
about 30 years old. He leaves a
widow, who is a daughter of the
Rev. W. W Ratchford, pastor of
Tirz di church.
The Tuzr.h communis loses
one of its Vet and most useful
citizens in the death ot Mr. Walkup.

church Sunday morning at 10
o'clock, the Rev. Mr. McKinstry
