A Newsy Letter from Columbia?The City's Many Attractions, Educational and Otherwise, But not Ahead of Rock Hill in Some Respects. Mr. Editor: Christmas is over in several respects. The emai 1 boy has ceased to (:make fu9s" with his fire crackers, torpedoes and "sticks". The business world has about settleddown to work again. The 6chool boy and girl the college man and woman are looking with dread to next week, when they must take up their books and "set'le down1' to a few more months o; work. But one ot the most im portant parts ol Xraas lingers, viz, "eating". The little girl is sttll"dee-!h htod1' with Iter dolb, her tea set, her doll 1 urn it tire, etc.. and so mi. The writer was at home in the "City of the Red * Rose " There it was quiet hut a merry Christmas. Well, Mr. Editor, why not come down to see the Capital ol your State? Should you ever have occasion to come down just remember that there are more 4 than one Lancastr an in Co'.um bia and any other of your cit'zene are cordially invited to visit us or to ni'>ve here. The three colleges, the Columbia College, the Col lege for Women and the University of South Carolina opened their doors in September and brought several hundred young and women into our city from all portions of ilie State, and *y the way Lancaster is well represented at all of these institutions. '-There have been various other amusements,such as '"Lady Baltimore Fete". Thanksgiving, Xmas and then the Theatre-goers have been well treated. The supreme cour. has brought to Columbia as one of its mem hers Judge Ira B. Jones of Lancaster. We were also glad to see several members ol her bar down here one week recently. From time to time we have seen several of our friends from Lancaster. We are always glad to see them. The Legislature convenes in a low days. 1 reparations are hemp made for the coming of law makers. Near LaCros-, Va.. on the Seaboard A'r Line at 2 :30 this morning the passengers in the s!e<ij or of train 81 oil' o! Rich 1 mood, were held up and robbed 1 of about $800, besides jewelry. The robbers, two in number, cot on at Aeca, north of here, as passengers and one remained ' in a day coach while the othei went through the sleeper. The ' Tubman conductor while at tempting to arrest the man rob bing his passengers, was shot by 1 the robber through tlie arm. The man then pulled the emergency brake cord, stopped the trail, and with his confederate escap ed to the woods. F. K. Raull, millionaire, of Kachine, Wis., was among tho passengers who were robbed. ivir. canaries Urimes Married. Another Railroad Horror, i This Time on B C& O Road near Washington?Many Persons Killed and Wounded. Washington, Dec. 30.?An appalling disaster occurred to night at 7 o'clock on the Baltimore & Ohio Kuilroad at Terra Gotta, about three miles from this city, in which about 38 per-1 sons were killed and over 00 injured, some of lhem so seriously they will die. The accident was caused by the collision of train No. 06, due here at 0:25 p. m., from Fredericksburg, Md , known as the Frederick special, with a dead-head passenger equipment special of eight cars. Over 200 passengers were aboard the il'-fa'ed fain. The railway officials tonight- were unable to :t-siirii any rau-e lor the collision. Charlotte, N. E. Maxwell, of Raleigh Running 50 miles an hour Engineer Maxwell sighted the freight as he rounded the curve ' nearPeachland :?i;ci with concern .only for the passenger*, whose ; lives were in his care, he applied the emergency brakes in an effort to moderate the impending crash. The speed was reduced to 10 miles an hour when the train struck and the fireman jumped without being hurt. Maxwell stuck to his post, was caught between the engine and tender and slowly roasted to death in j view of the rescuers, who strained every nerve to reach him. Helplessly pinned in an upright position with both feet in the firebox, the brave man lived four hours, fully conscionc, talking cheerfully to the rescuers, his last words being a message to his wife and child at Raleigh. No one else was hurt. Horrible Fate of a Young Man in Chesterfield--M. D. Smith, a Former School Teacher, Burned to Death. Patrick special in the Colum-j bia State : M. D. Smith, a young white man who live* about five miles north of Patrick, was | burned to death Monday night j at his h'linc. Srnilh had been to Chora w and was thought to have imbibed too much ChristI mas whiskey. lie was found dead in the yard. Ilis clothes i wore burned ollf.
