is always an interesting one
and many collections of their
have been published, but whih
V the oddity of some of these is
sure to provoke a smile, we
should remember that, absurd a?
they may seem to us, they were
but tlie earnest expression ol
deep feeling on the part of the
simple mourners who erected
them ; their lack of education
and of humor alike blinding
them to the grotesqueness of thf
sentiments they express. No o?.e
can suppose for a moment thai
the cowboys who had engraved
over the remains of their companion:
"lie done hi3 damdest
angels could "do no more," wert
not perfectly in earnest in theii
tribute to the worth of flieii
friend. In a N w England grave
yard there is an inscription
which expresses the s urie appre
ciation in somewhat more polished
terms:
"This modest stone, what few vain mar
bles can,

Saw nothing to regret, or there to fear.'
