One Hob Allen was convicted
in Georgetown last week of steal-1

Dr. Daniel, of Austin. Texas,
in his annual presidential address
before the A inerican Internation ,
al Congress of Tuberculosis. a|
few days ago, declared thai con j
sumption is sprea 1 a* churches. I
Is that the rea-on so many of j
Lancaster'.- sinners absent them-1
selves from church < We doubt \
it. If u circus should come along
the last 'ne ol them would be |
found crowded under the canvas;

A dead snake was found last
Saturday on the sidewalk in Last
Knd, next to "Squire Moore's
place. No inquest was held, as
it was evident that his snakeship
had lost his lite in trying to make
his way through the myriads ol
huge stones that una lorn the
pavement relerred to. The head
of the serpent was cru-lied beneath
a mighty boulder, which j
must have su Idenly toppled ovei
on it as it wiggled along that
"rough road to travel." li Conn
oil doesn't want all the snakes in
tlie country killed if had better
have those rocks crushed and

THE PRESENT RAILROAD SERVICE
The whole country is kicking
against the highly unsa'isfactory
service the railroads are giving
the public, both in the matter ot
belated passenger trains and delay
in freight delivery. The situation
everywhere seems to be
serious and the people are becoming
impatient to see improv
ed conditions. As we have had
occasion to state before, the excuse
of the railroads is that they
are unable to obtain additional
rolling stock fast enough to meet
the demands of a rapidly increasing
volume of business. That ?h
no doubt tri?e 90 far as the handling
of treigh' is conceruel, and
possibly to some ex'ent the passenger
business, but it does not
satisfactorily explain why passenger
trains day af'er day, week
alter week and month after
mon'h are run behind schedule
;ime. Why not change schedule?
to c onterra to estab ished ripiuing
capacity of trains? Upon this
point the Atlanta Journal says:
If we may be permitted to
suggest, the railroads ought to
lo something to relieve the si*u
atiou. 11 they cannot make the
schedules, then they ought to
change the schedules. Why have
a schedule,when the average ruu
uiug time is anywhere from two
o eight hours late? Why not
compromise the situation, if neccessary,
bv adding a sufficient
number of hours to the running
time, and then maintain the
chedu'es? If the trouble is noi
*ith the schedules.but wiih their
incompetent or indifferent officials,
then, in the name of com
mon sense, let the railroads nm
somebody in c harge with sufli
cient capacity to operate these
trains somewhere in the neigh
borhood of the aiivertised running
time. The present mode o
operation is a farce, and to ad*,
to the grievances of the public
these railroads have a custom
where their trains are late, o
posting upon the bulletin boar?l<
that they are about one houi
late, when they know, or oughi
to know, that in all probability
the train will be four, five or si>
hours late in arriving. There
is neither justification nor excuse
lor delaying the public in the
outrageous manner that they d<
and then deceiving them by post
ing false bulletins as to the time
oI arrival ot fains.
The Journal goes on to sug
legislation to correct exhtim
troubles, in c?%e railroads dc
not voluntarily dc so.
