C., until the scene t has been visited and the thousand and one details of the work ex- tl plained. To the casual spectator ti who may perchance pass by, the p tirpt impression is that of confu- tl sion, lack of order and a general h disarrangement of parts. It looks o as if there was no one plan being fi followed but that the several a works, scattered along the river t< for a distance of more than a | li mile, were nothing more than a l1 play house of a Clyclops boy.lii The incongruity of the scene is H striking. Out there in a wilder-1 h ness, away from any city, town jii or village, between two immense b hills, hundreds of men are work-! L ing as if tor dear life, building tl an immense wall. The wall is t< really a dam, but there is nothing o to indicate it for there is no water n visible. One unconsciously apks d the question, "What does all this j a mean anyhow?" a It is but necessary to watch the progress of the work for a short time to learn that there is c system and order in everything ^ that is done. One general scheme ^ has been planned, in the com- 0 pletion of which all the parts will o figure. The task is so immense and the amount of work to be * done so vast, that it must needs r be done in parts, all of which are 11 directed to one common end, namely, the construction of one 8 of the largest hydro-electric r plants in America. The Great Falls of the Cataw- ^ ba are a scries of rapids whic h i P are situated 50 miles below Char I ^ lotte and midway between Ches c ter, VVinnsboro, Camden and n Lancaster, thriving South farolina mill centers. " The river falls 175 feet in 7 miles, affording three fine sites 1 for hydro-electric development " When work was ready to be ,j, gin, surveys were made of the L adjacent country and it was . found that by building a dam I . I (1 out into the stream at the middle e of the rapids, the current mighti J ?( be turned into the bed of a nat- ^ ural canal and thus the develop- ^ me?t, greatly facilitated. Six c thousand feet beiow nature had L placed two large lulls on either ^ side of the canal and it was evi dent the main dam could be thrown across there at a relatively small cost. Work was com- ^ menced in the spring of 1005 and, I ^ today the dam and headgates to j the canal are more than twothirds completed, the greater | part of the bulkhead-wall and I" power house is finished, the) draught tubes and water wheel casings are nearly all set. and | the transformer house is well un- ' der way. A railway line, capable fi of handling the heaviest cars, I< has been run from Fort Lawn to ' v the Falls, a distance of 12 miles, 0( and the river on either side has j. been cleared of trees and under- ? e growth. The plant will be in operation the first of January, ?r very shortly thereafter.' ] The first glimpse that one has >f the Southern Power Company 8 at Fort Lawn. Besides the ailroad which runs due south a listance of 12 miles, there are to ( >e seen stretching north and j outh a double line of tall steel ^ owers. It was nly necessary for those in charge o blast and excavate a little and hen throw a dam across the cur. I ent and so turn all of the water uto the new channel. In this am headgates have been built o as to regulate the How of the iver into the new course. It has been strong enough / resist any pressure which may ^ e brought against K. The main dam is located a lit- ' le more than a mile below. The c laterial used in the construction here is the same as that above ? he dam is a little more than h alf finished. Hundreds of men, H a squads, are hard at work every j ay. Railway tracks run in v very direction and every labor j aving device is being used to acilitate the constrution. A half ozen immense cranes are in onstant operation on the dam, * ifting and placing in position * tie rock and cement.
