of the speeches are given lor

Eiow to Keep Irish Potatoes.
Southern Cultivator.
1 have a crop of Irish potatoes
[ wish to save until next spring.
Will you please tell me how to
liarvest and store them away so
they will keep? Also state the
indications which make harvest
time, and whether the time
mentioned will be too late to
plant Spanish peanutp.
H. B. M.
Brantly, Ala.
Comment by the Editor :
The Irish potato can be kept
in any cool, dark, dry place. A
cellar is a good place, if it is dry.
In case you havn't a cellar, put
them under a house, half bedded
in sand. The way all of ub should
keep our small ones from the
first crop is to raise a second crop.
You can do this easily by putting
them down and covering with
>ld sacks and keeping these sacks
wet. This will make them sprout)
in time to plant for second crop,'
ind insure a good stand. Another
?Ot;d disposition of them would!
I>e, to orepare a piece of land
''ell covered with manure, open I
i furrow at edge and drop in
/our potatoes, open another fur-1
nw and drop in more, until you i
inish. Then cover this whole
dot six or eight inches deep with
itraw or tratdi. You will then
lave a perpetual potato patch,|
nat will not need any work or
blunting atrain for years. We
uive seen two such patches this
,'prr. They pive you early potaoes
ami large ones. You can sini ,
>ly lay the potatoes on top of thai
;round ami cover with pine
^hw, or bettor wheat straw, and ,
'(Mir potatoes will be white and
lean when dug as though they <
lad been washed and scraped.

'Lige Goudy's Corn.
'Lige Goudy, a well-known and
popular passenger engineer, who
Iives at Seymour, is raising some
corn this year. A few days ago a
gentleman called at Mr. Goudy's
house to Hee him, and was informed
thai he had gone out to
look at his corn.
The gentleman went down to
the corn-field, which he found
grown over with weeds of gigantic
growth, with a sickly looking
stalk of corn peeping forth here
and there. The gentleman looked
across the field, but could not see
the proprietor thereof.
Finally the man climbed upon
the fence and shouted i
"Oh, 'Lige !"
To his surprise, a reply came
from among the weeds nearby, in
the familiar voice of Mr. Goudy.
The gentleman took a second
look, but could not quite locate
'Lige, and after a moment't hesitation,
said :
"Shake a weed, so I can tell
where you are!'1?Exchange.
Terrible Calamity?Farmers
in GreenwoodCounty Ruined
by Hail.
Epwortli special in Sunday's
State: ? Wednesday morning
about 9 o'clock this community
was completely swept by a terrible
hail storm, nothing at all be
ing leit on the land. Even the
trees were robbed of most of the
foliage and all fruits and vegetables
are gone. To-day tbe fields
are as clean and barren as the
public road. One can-not conceive
of anything so terrible. It
cannot be described.
The hail stricken district is
about lour mile9 long mid from
one to one and one-hall to two
miles across.
There are many people left in
very, very destitute circumstances,
without any provisions, no
work to do and nothing for the
horses and cattle. The loss estimated
at $20,000. Many ot these
families need help and need it
now. Any one wishing to contribute
to the storm sulferors will
kindly send contributions to the
Kpworth Supply company and
it will be given to the most
needy ones.
